Holdings

He held no lands, tenements, rents, or services of the king in chief in demesne or in fee. But he held the following by curtesy after the death of Margery, late his wife, one of the daughters and heirs of Warin Larchedekene knight, from the inheritance of [1.] Eleanor, wife of Walter Lucy knight , another of the daughters of Warin, and sister and one of the heirs of Margery; and [2.] Joan, wife of Nicholas Carrew knight , the daughter of Philippa the third daughter of Warin, and kin and another heir of Margery.

‘East’ Antony, the manor, held of Thomas Courtenay, earl of Devon , of his manor of ‘West’ Antony, by knight service. In the manor there are 20 messuages, each worth nothing yearly; 100 a. arable, each acre worth 2d. yearly; and 20 a. meadow, each acre worth 6d. yearly.
Penpoll, the manor, held of Roger Chaumpernon , of his manor of Shillingham, by knight service. In the manor there are 50 messuages, each worth nothing yearly; 200 ferlings of land, each worth 2s. 2d. yearly; 100 a. wood, of which the pasture and pannage are worth 6s. 8d. yearly; 100s. rent received from various free tenants at Christmas, Easter, Midsummer, and Michaelmas; and a ferry (passagium), worth 5s. yearly.
Landegea, the manor, held of the king , of the duchy of Cornwall, of the castle of Launceston, in socage. In the manor there are 21 messuages, each worth nothing yearly; 40 ferlings of land, each worth 20d. yearly; 50 a. wood, of which the pasture and pannage are worth 5s. yearly; a corn-mill, worth 6s. 8d. yearly; and 25s. rent received from various free tenants at the above feasts.
Roseworthy, the manor, held of Edward Pomeray , of his manor of Tregony, in socage. In the manor there are 30 messuages, each worth nothing yearly; 60 ferlings of land, each worth 20d. yearly; a corn-mill, worth 6s. yearly; 100 a. wood, of which the pasture and pannage are worth 6s. 8d. yearly; and 40s. rent received from various free tenants at the above feasts.
Veryan, £12 annual rent from the manor; and
Ruan Lanihorne, the advowson of the church, of no annual value,
both held of others than the king. He held the following jointly with Elizabeth his wife, who survives, by grant of John Arundell, knight , Thomas’s father, to them and the heirs of the body of Thomas.
Treveneague, the manor. In the manor there is a capital messuage, worth nothing yearly; 3 other messuages, each worth nothing yearly; and 12 ferlings of land, each worth 20d. yearly.
Penberthy, the manor. In the manor there are 30 messuages, each worth nothing yearly; 68 ferlings of land, each worth 20d. yearly; 2 corn-mills, worth 10s. yearly; and 60s. rent received from various free tenants at the above feasts of Christmas, Easter, Midsummer, and Michaelmas.
The manors are held of John Arundell, esquire , by service of a red rose, as appears in a charter shown to the jurors. John Arundell, knight , was seised of the following [described as the manors listed below, and 60 messuages and 50 [sic] ferlings of land in the vills listed below] in demesne as of fee, together with all the rents, services, reversions, and knights’ fees of all the tenants who held of him separately therein; all of which by charter shown to the jurors he granted to Thomas Arundell named in the writ, John Herle, knight , and Thomas Harry, clerk , now deceased, and John Tresythny , who survives, and the heirs of the body of Thomas Arundell . In the charter the premises were described as his manors of Tolverne, Prospidnick, Bodbrane, Reperry, and Pengwedna, and all his messuages, lands, and tenements, and rents, services, reversions, and knight’s fees of all the tenants who held of him separately in the vills named below.
Tolverne, the manor, held of Edmund, bishop of Exeter , of his manor of Tregaire, in socage. In the manor there are 20 messuages, each worth nothing yearly; 60 ferlings of land, each worth 2s. 6d. yearly; a dovecot, worth 12d. yearly; and 100 a. wood, of which the pasture and pannage are worth nothing yearly. The following pertain to the manor: the advowson of the church of St Just in Roseland, worth nothing yearly; and a ferry (passagium), worth 2s. 6d. yearly.
Prospidnick, the manor, held of Edmund, bishop of Exeter , of his manor of Tregaire [service not specified]. In the manor there are 12 messuages, each worth nothing yearly; 24 ferlings of land, each worth 20d. yearly; and 12 a. wood, worth nothing yearly.
Bodbrane, the manor, held of the king , of the duchy of Cornwall, of the manor of Liskeard, in socage. In the manor there are 20 messuages, each worth nothing yearly; 40 ferlings of land, each worth 20d. yearly; 60 a. wood, of which the pasture is worth 2s. yearly; and 26s. rent received from various free tenants at the above feasts of Christmas, Easter, Midsummer, and Michaelmas.

Trevarno, the vill, held of Edmund, bishop of Exeter , of his manor of Tregaire, in socage. In the vill there are 2 messuages, each worth nothing yearly; and 2 ferlings of land, each worth 2s. yearly.
Penryn (Penrynburgh), the vill, held of Edmund, bishop of Exeter , of his manor of Penryn (Penryn), in socage. In the vill there are 2 messuages, each worth 20d. yearly.

He died after noon on 24 June last. John Arundell is his son and next heir, aged 15 and more.Eleanor is aged 60 and more. Joan is aged 30 and more.

Order to the escheator of Cornwall to make partition into two equal parts of the manors, rents, and advowson named in 124 as held by curtesy; and to remove the king’s hand from the purparty of Eleanor, wife of Walter Lucy knight , and give seisin to Eleanor and Walter of her purparty of the manor of Landegea; retaining in the king’s hand the purparty of Joan, wife of Nicholas Carrew knight [CFR 1437–45, pp. 272–3].
