ROBERT LOKTON HEIR OF ELIZABETH LOKTON

606 Writ. ‡ 16 April 1437. [Wymbyssh].

On 24 November last, the king ordered the escheator of the county of York to take the fealty of Robert Wanesford , who had married Elizabeth, sister of William de Lokton , son of William de Lokton and Mary lately his wife, this Elizabeth being the kin and heir of Elizabeth, the daughter of William, son of William, and to cause the said Robert and Elizabeth, reasonable relief having been paid to the Exchequer by them, to have full seisin of all the lands which the said William, father of William, held by curtesy after the death of the said Mary of the inheritance of Elizabeth, daughter of William, these having come into and remaining in the king’s hand owing to the death of the said William, father of William, and the minority of the said Elizabeth, daughter of William, who had lately died a minor in the king’s wardship, the king having, for a certain fine paid in the hanaper, respited until a certain day yet to come the homage due from Robert by reason of his having issue by his said wife. Afterwards, as appears by inspection of the rolls of Chancery, Robert Lokton besought the king for remedy on this behalf, in that he was the brother of William, son of William and Mary, and the kin and heir of the said Elizabeth, daughter of William, as he was prepared to prove, and traversing the statement that the said Elizabeth, sister of William was the heir of Elizabeth, daughter of William. The king, willing justice to be done, orders the escheator to inquire by upright and law-worthy men of his bailiwick whether the said Robert Lokton is the kin and heir of Elizabeth, daughter of William, as aforesaid and, if so, what age is he.
