SUSSEX. Proof of age [indented]. Lewes 24 June 1431. [Haseley].

John Delve , 45 and more, swears that William was born at Denton, baptised in the church there, and was aged 21 on 15 November last (the feast of St Gertrude ). He saw William Lambe , William’s godfather, give him a silver-gilt goblet after the baptism. William Stopham , 58 and more, carried a basin with a silver ewer from the manor of Barton to the church so that William’s godparents could wash their hands after he was raised from the font. John Draper , 60 and more, carried a torch from the manor of Barton to the church before William on the day of his baptism. He held it during the entire service. Andrew Heghlond , 44 and more, met many men and women coming to the church after William’s baptism. They told him with great joy that William was baptised. John Bredon , 43 and more, saw Joan Preston , William’s godmother, give him 20s. after he was baptised. Richard Stopham , 45 and more, saw the burial of John Moys at Denton on the day that William was baptised. Moys had suffered from a long illness before his death. John Notbeme , 51 and more, carried 2 silver pots of red wine from the manor of Barton to the church: the wine was for the godparents and other bystanders. John Ponte , 47 and more, was in the church and saw Robert Forster give water to the godparents for washing their hands after William was raised from the font. William atte Wode of Chiddingly, 61 and more, was then servant in the office of bailiff in the manor, and fetched Eleanor Grene to wet-nurse William Hydenye . John atte Laye , 69 and more, knows because such a wind blew up after the baptism that the people of the vill feared the collapse of their weakened houses. James Bourehunte , 55 and more, knows because Joan his daughter was espoused to John Dalton on the day of the baptism. He was there. Philip Eston , 56 and more, was clerk of the parish church and held the book before the priest at the font during William’s baptism. John Turges put in a personal appearance at Lewes on 24 June but knew nothing to prevent the delivery of the lands and tenements to William Hydenye .
