Margery was one of the daughters and heirs of Ellen late wife of Geoffrey Brokhole, knight , who had held of ‪Henry V‬ in chief. John the son died a minor in ‪Henry V‬ ’s custody. John Leventhorp and Robert Darcy , to whom ‪Henry V‬ committed custody until Christine’s majority, to be informed [CFR 1413–22, p.304, to John Leventhorp only]. The jurors, separately examined, say that Christine was aged 15 years on the Thursday after St Laurence the martyr last [15 August 1426], that she was born at Colchester and baptised in the baptistery of the church of St Mary at the Wall there on the Thursday after St Laurence the martyr [13 August] 1411, and that her godfather was John Pod and her godmothers Christine late wife of Thomas Godeston and Mary late wife of Simon Fordham . Asked how they know, the give the following recollections of events 15 years ago. Roger Podeney , aged 40 years and more, says that as one of the parishioners he was in the church that day and heard mass by William Pentecost, chaplain , in the chapel called ‘Jocep Elianore’ and then John Canonn, rector, baptised Christine in the baptistery there. William Skylman , 50 years and more, was present in the church with many other men of the parish that day and saw and heard Christine baptised by John Canonn, rector , and named by John Pod , godfather, and Christine late wife of Thomas Godeston and Mary late wife of Simon Fordham , godmothers. Afterwards he saw many women going with Christine to the house of John Sumpter and Margery his wife. William Hoverd , 51 years and more, says that Parnel his wife went to Colchester to request licence to convey to the church, with the infant of John Sumpter and Margery his late wife in company with other neighbours of the parish. When she returned immediately afterwards to William’s house from church she told him that she had heard John Pod , Christine late wife of Thomas Godeston and Mary late wife of Simon Fordham name the infant Christine. William Saundre , 41 years and more, in the night of 12 August 1411 at Colchester heard Margery, then wife of John Sumpter , labour and cry out especially for her child’s delivery, and early in the morning of 13 August he knew through Joan, then his wife, that Margery had that night been delivered of an infant afterwards named Christine. Thomas Mildewell , 44 years and more, on 14 September 1411, the day that Margery was churched in that church, dined with John Sumpter and Margery, then staying in that parish. Robert Stalam , 45 years and more, espoused Joan, then his wife, in the church of St Peter on 23 April 1411, and the following 13 August Christine was born. William Bardolf , 43 years and more, says that Hawise his wife died and was buried in the churchyard of St Nicholas that day. John Cok , 42 years and more, was in the service of the king’s bailiffs of Colchester in 12 ‪Henry IV, carrying the mace before the baillifs according to the customs of the liberty of the vill. At Michaelmas after Christine’s birth, he withdrew from his office. Robert Fuller , 40 years and more, says that on 29 June 1411 at Colchester, Alice daughter of Joan, his wife, espoused Robert Slade of Colchester, and on 13 August Christine was born. Thomas Graunger , 41 years and more, says that at Pentecost 1411 at Colchester he took at farm the tenement in which he still lives from John Whitere , and the following 13 August Christine was born. John Fordham , 45 years and more, says that on 3 June 1411, he made John his son an apprentice in the city of London in the craft-guild of a mercer and the following 13 August Christine was born. Richard Weleye , 40 years and more, says that Richard his son died and was buried in the churchyard of St Botulph’s that day.
