Regarding inheritance as one of the daughters and heirs of Philippe, late wife of Hugh Courtenay, chevalier . Hugh held by curtesy of the inheritance of Joan and of Eleanor, the other daughter and heir of Philippe, and a minor in the king’s wardship. Joan’s majority claimed by Nicholas Carewe, esquire .

The jurors, separately examined, say that Joan is of full age, that she was born at Haccombe and baptised in the church there, and on 14 August last she was aged 14 years and more. They have the following recollections. Thomas Trobryg , aged 60 years and more, carried a torch at her baptism. John Spencer , 58 years and more, married... his wife who survives, the day that Joan was baptised. William Squyer , 59 years and more, says that there was such a strong wind the day Joan was baptised that many houses in the vill collapsed. John Prous , 56 years and more, gave water to the godfathers and godmothers to wash their hands immediately after Joan was baptised. John Mattysford , 54 years and more, says that his horse violently threw him to the ground and he broke his left leg, the day that Joan was baptised. Richard Worthy , 53 years and more, was parish clerk and held the Bible before the priest when Joan was baptised. John Takell , 59 years and more, says that Elizabeth his wife gave birth to a son named Robert, the day that Joan was born. John Forslond , 53 years and more, carried a ewer when Joan was carried to church for baptism. Thomas Rygge , 52 years and more, carried two silver pots full of red wine to the church for Joan’s godfathers and godmothers and bystanders to drink when Joan was baptised. John Cliston , 48 years and more, saw John M[?ekton], Joan’s godfather, give her 20s. immediately after she was baptised. William atte Wille , 49 years and more, was sent to get Alice ?Bartays to be Joan’s wet- nurse the day that Joan was baptised. William William [sic], 46 years and more, carried a... before Joan when she was carried to church for baptism.
