MIDDLESEX. Proof of age. Tottenham. 26 September 1425. [Scotte]
The jurors say that John was born at Tottenham and baptised in the church there and was aged 21 years on 25 March last. They know because of the following recollections. John Drayton, esquire , aged 47 years, saw John duke of Bedford , a godfather, give John a gold goblet immediately after he was baptised. Thomas Danyell, esquire , 45 years, says that a house of the parson of Tottenham church was burned by a sudden fire the day that John was baptised. John Fuller , 60 years and more, married Margery, who survives, on 2 February before the day that John was baptised. Reginald Bright , 60 years and more, says that Gilbert his son died the day that John was baptised, after a long illness. John Drake , 60 years and more, says that Margaret his wife gave birth to a son named Matthew the day that John was baptised. John Stokes , 63 years and more, says that there was such a strong wind in the vill the day that John was baptised that men feared the weaker of their houses would collapse. William Lovelane , 46 years and more, broke his right leg through a sudden fall from his horse the day that John was baptised. John Aleyn , 70 years and more, says that Robert his son celebrated his first mass after he was appointed priest in the church the day that John was baptised. William Elys , 56 years and more, on the day that John was baptised placed Richard his son with Robert Samford of London, draper, to serve Robert faithfully as a live-in apprentice for 10 years. William Popilton , 50 years and more, says that his ship loaded with various merchandise was sunk at sea by a sudden storm the day that John was baptised. William Stephene , 58 years and more, held a torch before John when he was baptised. John Lorymer , 64 years and more, says that William his son assumed the religious habit in the house of the Carthusian order at London the day that John was baptised.
