Inquisition Head

OXFORDSHIRE. Proof of age. Wilcote. 12 May 1425. [Daunevers]

Thomas Wykham, knight , aged 56 years and more, examined separately on Thomas Baldyngton ’s age says that Thomas was aged 21 years on 1 August last, that he was born at Wilcote and baptised in the baptistery of the parish church there on 1 August 1403, and that his godfathers were himself and John Waget and his godmother Amice wife of William Lisle, knight . Asked how he knows this he says that on that day Joan his daughter died and was buried the same day at Broughton or Broughton Poggs. The other jurors, separately examined, agree with Thomas Wykham and know the age because of the following recollections of events 21 years ago. William Lisle, knight , 60 years and more, says that on 2 June 1403 Thomas Smyth, clerk , was instituted and inducted to Wilcote church as rector of the parish, and the following 1 August he baptised Thomas Baldyngton in the baptistery there, and he was... with the rector there. Richard Quartermaynes , 52 years and more, married Sibyl, his late wife, then companion (socia) of Joan, Thomas’s mother, at Wilcote on 24 June 1403. Thomas Somerton , 46 years and more, was at Wilcote at the time of Thomas’s baptism and held a burning torch. Robert Quynaton , 60 years and more, says that on 24 June 1403 he drove his cart loaded with hay from the demesne meadow of the manor of Balscott to the manor’s grange. He fell from the laden cart in the grange and broke his left arm. The following 1 August Thomas was born. Thomas Coventre , 60 years and more, was playing football with his fellows on 1 August 1403 at Wilcote and broke his left shin. Thomas Denton , 61 years and more, was at Wilcote with Joan his wife when Joan mother of Thomas gave birth and they were at her churching on 10 August 1403. Richard Purcell , 60 years and more, says that John his son took holy orders long before that day, and celebrated his first mass in Wilcote church the same day that Thomas was born and baptised there. John Blakwell , 50 years and more, had his first-born son William baptised in the baptistery of Wilcote church that day, and last 1 August William was aged 21 years. John Tysho , 56 years and more, says that on that day William Tysho his father died at Wilcote, and he thereby inherited lands and tenements in Wilcote. Henry Cotom , 42 years and more, says that on that day at Wilcote, John Wargon hanged himself from a tie-beam (laqueo se suspendebat) and he came to Wilcote to see John hanging. Returning, he met a woman called Amice carrying Thomas to Wilcote church for baptism. William Coke , 46 years and more, says that his house in Wilcote burned down that day immediately after Thomas’s birth. [Dorse:] Before the lord [blank] king in Chancery.
