JOHN DYNELAY BROTHER AND HEIR OF RICHARD DYNELAY SON AND HEIR OF JOHN DE DYNELAY

356 Writ de etate probanda. ‡ 12 July 1424. [Wymbyssh]

To the Chancellor of the county palatine of Lancaster ordering him to command the escheator to act according to an accompanying writ, and to return the proof to the Chancery of England. Henry Hoghton, chevalier , to whom custody of John de Dynelay ’s 2/3 manor of Downham was granted by letters patent of ‪Henry V‬, to be informed [CPR 1416–22, p.30]. Richard died a minor in ‪Henry V‬ ’s wardship. [Dorse:] William Troutbek , Chancellor of the county palatine of Lancaster , commanded the named escheator to act on the king’s writ, return the proof to the Chancery at Lancaster and send his response before the king in the Chancery of England.

The jurors say that John Dynelay , brother and heir of Richard Dynelay son and heir of John de Dynelay who held of ‪Henry V‬ in chief, Richard having died a minor in ‪Henry V‬’s custody, is aged 21 years and more. Questioned by the escheator as to how they know his age, they answer that John Dynelay was born at Downham on 29 June 1402 and baptised in the church there. John de Kirbody, parish chaplain, baptised him and John Bolde of Chatburn was his godfather, Alice de Osbaldston his godmother. They recollect for the following reasons. John de Morley , aged 50 years and more, was at the church that day and heard mass before he went on pilgrimage to St William’s at York. John Banastre of Lostock, 40 years and more, was at the church that day at the obit of John Tatsale . Christopher Banastre , 40 years and more, was at the church that day to... Richard de Hoghton, knight , the king’s chief steward. James de Prestcote , 59 years and more, was at the church that day at a loveday between Richard Nowell and John de A[?b]ham . Ralph de Holcroft , 40 years and more, was at the church that day and heard mass with Richard de Hoghton, knight . Richard de Thorneton , 60 years and more, was at the church that day and heard mass before he went to Pontefract. Robert de Syngleton , 40 years and more, was at the church that day to talk with Gilbert Proktour, mason . Thomas de Tatehill , 40 years and more, was at the church that day and heard mass before he went to Ripon to buy a horse. John Breton , 40 years and more, was at the church that day... came from the abbey of Salley. Thomas de Bolron , 60 years and more, was at the church that day to view a horse which John de Kirkby had for sale. Henry del Rowe , 40 years and more, was at the church that day and heard mass after he came from Grindleton. Ralph de Worthyngton , 50 years and more, was at the church and heard mass before he went to... Stonyhurst to talk with Richard de Shirburn .
