CHRISTINE WIFE OF PHILIP CARY AND SISTER AND HEIR OF RICHARD SON AND HEIR OF WILLIAM ORCHARD

Christine’s majority claimed by Philip Cary . Richard died a minor in ‪Henry V‬’s wardship. John Dabernon , who had custody until heir’s majority by commission of ‪Henry V‬, to be warned to be present [CFR 1413–22, p.325]. [Dorse:] John Dabernon informed by John Hakeworthy and William atte Wylle of date and place, specified.

DEVON. Proof of age. Shebbear. 19 December 1422. [Copleston]

The jurors say that Christine was born at Ladford and baptised in St Michael’s church, Shebbear, and was aged 14 years and more on 29 November last. They know for the following reasons. Thomas Bynneworthy , aged 60 years and more, knows because John Bynneworthy his son died from the plague the same day that Christine was baptised. John More, senior , 51 years and more, was then the parish clerk and held the Bible in his hands while Christine was baptised. William Brigman , 45 years and more, says that Margaret his daughter was married to John Hesill the same day that Christine was born and baptised. John More junior , 43 years and more, saw Joan Crumle , godmother, give her 6s. 8d. soon after [? she was baptised ms stained and worn]. William Seller , 50 years and more, says that at the time Christine was baptised there was such a strong wind that all men and women of Ladford [feared] the collapse of the weaker of their houses. Henry Buryman , 44 years and more, carried a basin and ewer from Ladford manor to the church before Christine the same day that she was baptised. Thomas Lylbere , 42 years and more, says that Elizabeth his wife was diligently asked to nurse Christine the same day she was baptised. Hugh Buryman , 60 years and more, says there was a great plague that year which killed very many men. William Lake , 49 years and more, says that Alice his wife gave birth to a boy named Robert who died immediately after baptism, the same day that Christine was baptised. Richard Bury , 52 years and more, says that John Bury his son was professed as a Franciscan friar in the friars’ convent at Exeter the same day that Christine was baptised. Richard Rowedon , 46 years and more, the same day that Christine was baptised fell from a horse such that he broke his right arm and right leg and sustained grievous pain. John Wothull , 47 years and more, says that the same day Christine was baptised there was such a great storm at sea that his ship called 'la Kateryne' was submersed with the possessions and merchandise in the ship... men of the ship were... and destroyed.
