Inquisition Head

Derbyshire. Proof of age. Chesterfield. 26 June. [Goushill].

Henry Thomasson , 45, says that John Sutton, knight , was born at Barton Blount and baptized in the church there, and was aged 21 years on 6 Jan. last. He knows because he saw John's godfather Walter Blount give him a cup of silver gilt after his baptism. The other jurors say the same. They know for the following reasons. William Mage , 58, carried a silver ewer and basin from the manor of Barton Blount to the church with water for the godfathers and godmother to wash their hands in after raising John from the font. Henry Purkas , 60, carried a large candle from the manor to the church. Robert Hareman , 44, met many men and women coming from the church who told him that John had been baptized amid great rejoicing. Henry Rolleston , 49, saw John's godmother Joyce Blount give him a noble. John Rybuth , 44, says that his son Robert , who had been ill for a long time, was buried at Barton Blount on the day of John's baptism. William Tyrry , 51, carried 2 silver measures with red wine from the manor of Barton Blount to the church for the godfathers and godmother and the others standing round to drink. John Tyrry , 44, saw Robert Forster give water to the godfathers and godmother to wash their hands in after raising John from the font. Thomas Freman , 48, was bailiff of the manor and was sent to summon Alice Jurdan to be John's nurse. Richard Bulder , 45, says that a strong wind blew up and that the men and women of the township were afraid that their houses would be damaged. Thomas Clerk , 43, was parish clerk of the church of Barton Blount and held a book in front of the priest during John's baptism. John Bate of Allestree , 45, says that his daughter Isabel married John Walton on the day of John's baptism.
