JOHN SON AND HEIR OF MILES DE STAPULTON

Thomas Russell of Wighill, Robert Dryffeld , Robert Hardy and Richard Clerk , all of Tadcaster, Richard Blase , Robert Forster , Thomas Ogilthorp , John Lyle , John de Sandford and Robert Mortayn , both of Bilton, John de Bergh and Richard de Otteley of Newton say that John is aged 21 years and more and was born at Wighill and was baptized in the church there on 8 Sept. 1399. They know for the following reasons: Thomas Russell, 50, had a daughter Katharine born at Wighill on the same day. Robert Dryffeld , 45, went with Miles to Healaugh to ask John Depden, knight , to be one of John's godfathers. Robert Hardy , 60, rode at Miles's request to Ripon to ask John de Lynton to be the other godfather. Richard Clerk , 47, rode at Miles's request to Syningthwaite to ask Agnes de Sheffeld , a nun, to be John's godmother. Robert Forster , 44, says he had a son called John born on that day and baptized in the church of Healaugh. Thomas Ogilsthorp , 51, had his house at Clifford burnt down. John Lyle , 56, was at Wighill with Robert Mauleverer to speak with John's godfather, John Depeden, knight , and broke his shin there. John de Sandeford , 51, said that John Forster insulted, assaulted, wounded and badly treated him. Robert Mortayn , 48, was the steward of John Depeden, knight , and held a court at Thorp Arch. John de Bergh, 60, says that he was arrested at Wighill and taken to York castle by order of the king. Richard Otteley , 49, rode from Wighill to the mansion of Henry Vavasour, knight , at Hazelwood to tell him of John's birth and baptism, and Henry gave him 6s. 8d. for his trouble.
