AGNES WIDOW OF THOMAS DE TREWYKE

Taken pursuant to a writ addressed to John Ery..., late escheator, and delivered by him by indenture to the present escheator.

Holdings

She held in dower from Thomas her late husband:

Cramlington, 2 husbandlands and 2 a. and in Whitlow 20 a. arable waste of the king in chief by knight service, annual value 8s.

Hartley, 6 a. of the king in chief by knight service, annual value 13d.

South Middleton, 16 a., annual value 2s.6d., and in Bolam 5 a. all of the barony of Bolam by knight service, annual value 2s.3d.

John de Tyndale , John de Dalton , and John de Eglyngham, chaplain , granted her the manor of Trewick for life by their charter dated 1 Feb. 1413 and shown to the jurors, and gave seisin, with remainder to Eleanor her daughter, wife of John Hoggyson , and the heirs of her body. Agnes died holding it of the lord of Harnham by a rent of one unmewed sparrowhawk, annual value 53s.4d.

She died on 5 March last. Eleanor and Joan are her daughters and next heirs, aged 35 and 30 years and more.

The date of the charter has also been corrected from 1413 to 1412, the remainder of Trewick corrected slightly, and the sentence identifying her heirs moved down to follow her death date.

Regarding 53. Eleanor has appeared in Chancery asking for the king’s hand to be removed and the issues since death to be delivered to her, showing an indented charter by which John de Tyndale , John de Dalton and John de Eglyngham, chaplain granted the manor and vill of Trewick with members in Trewick and Belsay and the mill of Trewick with its suit or multure to Agnes de Holgrafe , wife of William de Holgrafe , for the term of her life, with remainder to Eleanor wife of John Hogeson of Trewick, and the heirs of her body. She asserts that Agnes de Trewyk and Agnes de Holgrafe are the same, and that the manor and vill of Trewick with mill comprise the manor of Trewick mentioned in the inquisition. Inquire if this is so.

Agnes de Trewyke and Agnes wife of William Holgrafe are one and the same person. Eleanor wife of John Hogeson daughter of Agnes and Eleanor wife of John Hogeson of Trewick named in the charter are also one and the same. All the premises named in the charter comprise the manor of Trewick.
