He held no lands or tenements of the king in chief or of any other, in demesne as of fee, in reversion, or in service. But a fine [CP 25/1/191/24/43] concerning the following was raised in the court of ‪ Richard II at Westminster, in the quindene of Martinmas, 1394, and recorded in the octave of Hilary, 1395, between John Thornebury, parson of the church of Crudwell , and Thomas Weston of Cricklade, querents , and Nicholas Chausy, senior , and Margaret his wife, deforciants. Nicholas acknowledged the manor to be the right of John, as that which John and Thomas had by grant of Nicholas and Margaret, for which John and Thomas granted the manor to Nicholas and Margaret, for the term of their lives, with remainder to Robert, son of John de Stanshawe , and Margaret – daughter of Elizabeth, daughter of Nicholas – and the heirs of their bodies; with successive remainders to the heirs of the body of Margaret, daughter of Elizabeth; and to John de Stanshawe and Isabel his wife, and the heirs of John. The fine was shown to the jurors. By virtue of the fine Nicholas and Margaret were seised in demesne as of free tenement, and they died seised of such estate. After their deaths Robert and Margaret entered the manor as in the remainder and were seised in demesne as of fee tail. Margaret died seised of such estate without heir of her body and without heir of her body and of the body of Robert. Robert survived and held the manor by right of survivorship. He married one Isabel, and they had issue: Robert Stanshawe . Afterwards the above John Stanshawe and Isabel his wife died. After their deaths the right of fee simple descended to the above Robert, son of John, who was then seised of the manor by virtue of the fine. Afterwards, thus seised in demesne as of fee, he feoffed the above Robert – his son – and his heirs and assigns. This Robert, who survives, was and still is seised of the manor in demesne as of fee.
