Addressed to William Jay, mayor and escheator. By royal grant [CFR 1437–45, p. 199], the lands and tenements from John’s inheritance are in the custody of Thomas Hagyrston, esquire , who is to be warned. [Dorse:] He was warned [date and place as below] by John Ros , Richard Horn , ?coroner, Thomas Herle , and Robert ?Soe.

Holdings

The jurors swear that he was born in Newcastle [date not specified] in the parish of St John the Baptist, and baptized in the parish church, and was 22 on Martinmas [ 11 November ] last. They know and recall this with reference to the following memories of the day of his birth. John Musgrave , aged 50 and more, was present in the church during the baptism, and saw John fitz Henre and John Layng , the godfathers, give the child 2 marks of silver immediately after he was baptised. Edward Bartram , aged 52 and more, recalls because Joan, his daughter, was born and baptised in the same church. Robert Wyndgates , aged 60 and more, carried a basin and ewer to the church, with water for the godfathers and godmother to wash their hands after John was lifted from the font. Robert Wetwayng , aged 68 and more, recalls because his daughter Joan died, and was buried in the cemetery of the same church. William Medecorft , aged 62 and more, had a son, John, born and baptised in the same church. John Raa , aged 60 and more, recalls because the river Tyne entered his house in Newcastle on account of the tide and of the heavy rain that day. Robert Laverok , aged 62 and more, married Katherine, his daughter, to John Whithede , in the same church. Thomas Barbour , aged 50 and more, knows because Joan, his wife, was godmother, and Thomas gave her a silver goblet to give to John after he was baptized. Thomas himself gave 20d. to John’s nurse Thomas Lincoln , aged 60 and more, carried a towel and a silver salt-cellar before the child to the church. Robert Swynburn , aged 60 and more, knows because on the same day Robert, his son, made affray with Nicholas Horton , who struck him on the arm and gave him a great wound. John Litster, senior , aged 50 and more, knows because John, his son, espoused Joan, daughter of John Cotour , in the same church. John Witton , aged 50 and more, held a torch in his hand in the church during the whole baptism.
