The jurors were sworn and diligently examined on the age of Henry. They say that he was born at Pontesbury on the Sunday after the feast of St Laurence 8 Henry V, and baptised in the church there.n529 He was aged 21 on the Sunday after the feast of St Laurence last. They know for the following reasons. Richard Laken, knight , 60 and more, saw Henry V raise Henry Grey from the font on the day of the birth and baptism. William Poynour , 70 and more, knows because John Yong was espoused to Katherine, daughter of William, at Pontesbury. Griffith ap Ieuan ap Reryth, 58 and more, bought a white horse with a black foot from John Grey at Pontesbury for 5 marks. David ap Griffith ap Ieuan , 55 and more, took a bovate in Pontesbury to farm for 20 years from John Grey at Pontesbury for 6s. 6d. yearly. William Boerdon , 52 and more, carried Henry in his arms to and from the church. Thomas Hopton of Rockhill, 70 and more, knows because Edward his son was born on the same day at Pontesbury. Richard Husee of Albright Hussey, 62 and more, knows because Richard Donyngton shot him in the shin with an arrow on the same day at Pontesbury, wounding him horribly. John Poynour , 49 and more, rode for Joan Karles in Longnor to carry her to Pontesbury so that she could raise Henry from the font. William Coton , 55 and more, fell from a bay horse at Pontesbury and broke his arm. William Leghton , 62 and more, was espoused to Margery, daughter of William Poynour , at Pontesbury. William Borleton , 73 and more, carried the chrism to the font for Henry’s baptism. William Poleley , 64 and more, was hired by John Grey to build a new grange in a tenement at Pontesbury.

[Foot:] Memorandum that Henry Grey petitioned for livery of the lands and tenements of his inheritance, then in the king’s hand, on the said 5 December.

n528^: The escheator’s name is not given in the proof of age. The writ was endorsed by Robert Whytcombe, escheator 4 November 1440–3 November 1441, when he was replaced by William Lyngen.
n529^: It is unclear which feast of St Laurence is indicated. The feast of St Laurence the Martyr fell on 10 August, and that of St Laurence the Archbishop fell on 3 February.
