YORKSHIRE. Proof of age. The castle at York.25 January 1440. [Ughtred].
Holdings
The jurors were sworn and diligently examined on the age of Henry. They swear that he was born at Bolton Castlen359 in the parish of Wensley, baptised in the chapel of St Oswald of Bolton, and was aged 21 on the Sunday before the feast of the translation of St Thomas the Martyr 17 Henry VI [5 July 1439]. They well know this for the following reasons. Edmund Pole, esquire , 60 and more, carried a silver and gilt basin with an ewer to the chapel on the day of the baptism. Alexander Lound , 43 and more, saw Henry Perecy, earl of Northumberland , godfather of Henry, give him a covered gilt cup. John Fitzhenry , 42 and more, saw Joan, countess of Westmorland , Henry’s godmother, give him a covered cup of gold. Nicholas Baildon , 44 and more, rode with Henry, earl of Northumberland, Henry’s godfather, to the castle on a stock gelding (Stoche Geldyng), a gift from the earl. Ralph Federstane , 60 and more, carried a torch to the chapel. John Clyff , 66 and more, carried a torch to the chapel. Robert Wardrepp , 50 and more, saw Margaret Langton, lately servant of the countess, asked there by Richard, Henry’s father, to nurse and feed him. James Mettcalff , 50 and more, saw Ralph Euer , Henry’s godfather, give him 10 marks of gold. Brian Dayvell , 44 and more, carried the sword of the earl of Northumberland to the chapel, and then from the chapel to the castle. Thomas Hagthorp , 50 and more, delivered to the countess a gold ring and 20s. of gold to give to Henry’s nurse. George Palmes , 46 and more, was hunting in the park of Bolton and killed a deer (damum). Robert Ryplay , 54 and more, went with Richard, Henry’s father, to the castle of Middleham to beseech the countess to baptise him [i.e. be his godmother].

n359^: Only Edmund Pole, the first juror, is explicit about the fact that Henry was born in the castle. The other jurors say that he was born ‘at Bolton aforesaid’ and baptised in the ‘chapel aforesaid’.
