He was not sole tenant of any lands or tenements held of the king. William Tounlond of London, ‘merser’, was lately seised of the following messuage and land in demesne as of fee. He granted them to John Edyncham of Woodchurch and Joan, who was wife of Thomas Whedot of Warehorne, and to the heirs and assigns of John. The grant was made by his charter dated at Woodchurch on 14 October 1429, and royal licence was obtained as shown by letters patent dated at Westminster on 13 October 1429, shown to the jurors [CPR 1429–36, p. 4].n023 The messuage and land were described in the grant as the manor of Townland in the parish of Woodchurch.
Woodchurch, a messuage and 34 a. land, held of the king , as of the honour of Perche, as 1/3 knight’s fee. There is the site of the manor, worth nothing yearly as completely ruinous and tumble-down; and 34 a. land, each acre worth 8d. yearly. In addition to the messuage and land held of the king , there is the following in the manor: 20 a. pasture, held of the archbishop of Canterbury in ‘Gauelkynde’, each acre truly worth 8d.; and 6s. 8d. assize rent from various tenants, payable on the feast of St Stephen the Protomartyr.
John and Joan were thus seised of this estate and no other in the manor. By his charter dated at Woodchurch on 20 September 1431, shown to the jurors, John granted the manor, without royal licence, to Richard Edyncham , his son, then of full age, and to Alan Edyncham , John atte Hope , and William Harlakynden , and to their heirs and assigns. John Edyncham afterwards died and Joan released her entire right in the manor to Richard, Alan, John, and William, by deed. They were thus jointly seised of the manor, and Richard died seised of this estate, and no other, on 21 April 1438. Alan, John, and William are still living.

John Edyncham , his son and next heir, was aged 11 years and more on 12 March last.

n022^: The date as recorded in ms translates to 25 September 1437 (‘Wednesday after the feast of St Matthew the Apostle 16 Henry VI’), but Richard Frogenhall was not escheator on this date: the List of Escheators records that his tenure ran 28 November 1437–6 November 1438. It is probable that the ms should read ‘Wednesday after the feast of St Matthew the Apostle 17 Henry VI’. This date translates as 24 September 1438 and accords with the dates of Frogenhall’s tenure as well as the date of the writ.

n023^: CPR and C 66/426: ‘12 October’.
