Holdings

He held no lands or tenements of the king in chief or any others in demesne or service. Described as Richard Rede of Ireland, he was lately seised in his demesne as of fee of the manors of

Wallbury, annual value £6 14s.,
Hassenbrook, annual value 105s. 8d., and
Vange, annual value £4 13s. 4d.,
which he held of the king in chief by knight service. By deception and collusion, he enfeoffed John Rede , his son and heir apparent, a minor, John parson of Little Hallingbury church and William Wetnale , citizen and grocer of London, and their heirs, with the manors. This enfeoffment was intended to allow Richard to receive all issues during his lifetime; immediately after his death John and William would receive the issues for the use and profit of John his son during his minority; and when John reached his majority, John and William were to deliver all their right and estate to him and his heirs, thereby defrauding the king of the heir’s marriage and custody of the manors during his minority.

He died on 21 December last. John his son is his next heir, aged 14 years and more.

Addressed to William Paston , Henry Chaterton , John Fray and Thomas Basset , to inquire into all custodies of lands and tenements of those persons who held of the king or his ancestors in chief, and wardships, marriages, reliefs, escheats, fines for escape of felons and fugitives and forfeitures and whatsoever rights belonging to the king, subtracted, detained or concealed from the king or his ancestors, and similarly whatever wastes, destructions and ruins made in Essex both in the lands and tenements of the king and his ancestors and in those in the hand of the king and his ancestors by reason of the custody of minors, or otherwise, to the damage or prejudice of the king [CPR 1429–36, p. 279].
