She held in dower from the inheritance of Elizabeth wife of John Burcestre sister and heir of William Whitchestre, chevalier , son of William Whitchestre son of Alice, lately wife of John Whitchestre and sister of Henry, a third of the manors of Seaton Delaval, North Dissington, and Black Callerton, with a third of a messuage and 12 a. land in Holywell, and a third of the issues, profits, fealty, and suit of court and mill of Seaton Delaval, and a third of 26s. 8d. rent, viz., 8s. 10½d., taken from all the lands and tenements formerly of Stephen Lescrop, chevalier , William de Vescy , and William Haliwell in Holywell, parcel of the manor of Seaton Delaval, and a third of ½ manor of Hartley. By a fine levied at Westminster on the octave of the Purification of Mary 1333 [CP 25/1/181/11 no. 25], John de Seton, chaplain , granted the whole of the manors of Seaton Delavel and North Dissington, the whole of the messuages and land in Holywell, the whole of the issues, profits etc. of Seaton Delaval, and the whole of the rent there, described as his manors of Seaton Delaval and Dissington, to Robert de la Vale and the heirs of his body; and, described as John de Seton de la Vale , chaplain , he granted ½ manor of Hartley to Robert de la Vale , described as Robert de la Vale, chevalier , for life, with remainder to William son of Robert, and the heirs of his body. By another fine levied at Westminster on the octave of the Purification of Mary 1333 [CP 25/1/181/11 no. 24], Robert granted the manor of Black Callerton, of which he was seised in demesne as of fee, to his son, William de la Vale , and to Agnes wife of William, and to the heirs of their bodies together. Robert afterwards died seised of the manors of Seaton Delaval and North Dissington, with the messuage, land, rent, issues, profits, fealty, and suit of court and mill in demesne as of fee tail, and seised of ½ manor of Hartley as of free tenement. These descended to William by virtue of the fine, and William entered ½ manor of Hartley in remainder. Agnes then died, and William afterwards died seised in demesne as of fee tail of the manors of Seaton Delaval and North Dissington, with the messuages, land, rent, issues, profits, fealty, suit of court, and the mill, ½ manor of Hartley, and the manor of Black Callerton. All except the manor of Black Callerton descended to Henry former husband of Joan, as son and heir of William de la Vale . The manor of Black Callerton descended to Henry as son and heir of William and Agnes. Henry was thus seised of all the above in demesne as of fee tail, and he died seised of this estate. Everything descended to Alice lately wife of John Whitchestre , as sister and heir of Henry because he died without heir of his body. Thirds of the above were assigned in dower to Joan, the reversion of which Alice died seised in right and fee tail. After the death of Alice, right in the reversion descended to William Whitchestre as son and heir of Alice. He died so seised and right descended to William Whitchestre, chevalier , as son and heir of William Whitchestre . He too died so seised and right descended to Elizabeth wife of John Burcestre , as sister and heir of William Whitchestre, chevalier, because he died without heir of his body. The thirds are held of the king in chief as 1/6 knight’s fee.

Seaton Delaval, 1/3 manor. There is a chamber, 1/3 hall, 1/3 cook-house, and 1/3 ruinous grange, not demised at farm because of lack of tenants; 24 a. demesne land, each acre worth 6d. yearly; 5 a. meadow, each acre worth 20d. yearly; 3 built messuages and 2 tofts, with 5 husband-lands, each messuage with a husband-land worth 10s. yearly, and each toft with a husband-land worth 6s. 8d. yearly; 2 cottages, demised together for 4s. yearly; and two waste cottages, demised together for 2s. 6d. yearly.
Holywell, 1/3 messuage, worth 4s. yearly; and a third of 12 a. land, worth 2s. yearly.
Seaton Delaval, issues, profits, and suit of court, worth 12d. yearly above the seneschal’s expenses; and suit of mill, worth nothing yearly because the mill is waste.
North Dissington, 1/3 manor. There is the site, with no buildings because devastated by the Scots, its herbage demised for 12d. yearly; 18 a. demesne land, each acre worth 4d. yearly; 4 a. meadow, each acre demised for 16d. yearly; and 4 tofts with 4 husband-lands, each toft with a husband-land demised for 5s. yearly.
Black Callerton, 1/3 manor. There is the site, with no buildings because devastated by the Scots, its herbage worth 12d. yearly; 20 a. demesne land, each acre demised for 4d. yearly; 4 a. meadow, each acre worth 16d. yearly; 3 built messuages with 3 husband-lands, each messuage with a husband-land demised for 6s. 8d. yearly; and 3 tofts with 3 husband-lands, each toft with a husband-land demised for 5s. yearly.
Hartley, a third of ½ manor. There is the site, with no buildings, where the herbage is worth 12d. yearly; 18 a. demesne land, each acre worth 4d. yearly; 3 a. meadow, each acre worth 18d. yearly; 3 messuages with 3 husband-lands, each messuage with a husband-land worth 10s. yearly; and a cottage, demised for 20d. yearly.
She held no other nor more lands or tenements in demesne or service of the king in chief or any other because, long before her death, during Michaelmas term 1406, William Whitchestre prosecuted a writ forma donationis against Richard Goldesburgh, chevalier , and Joan then his wife, lately the wife of Henry, regarding the manors of Dukesfield and Brandon, a rent of 8 marks taken yearly from the manor of Branton, parcel of the manor of Brandon, and ½ manor of High or Low Buston (Botelesden). William Whitchestre thereby recovered seisin of the manors, rent, and moiety against Richard and Joan, as appears more fully in the record of the recovery shown to the jurors. Joan thus did not die seised of these manors, rents, and moiety.

She died on 22 May last. Elizabeth wife of John Burcestre is kin and next heir of Henry by virtue of the grants and entails, as the sister of William Whitchestre, chevalier , son of William Whitchestre son of Alice sister of Henry, and aged 23 and more.

[Dorse:] Joan wife of Henry de la Vale .
