Hugh Courtenay, lord of Okehampton and late earl of Devon , was seised of the following in demesne as of fee.
Whitwell, the manor, held of the king in chief by knight service. There are 90 a. arable, each acre worth 6d. yearly; 100 a. pasture, each acre worth 4d. yearly; 9 a. meadow, each acre worth 12d. yearly; 3 a. alder, worth nothing yearly; and 2s. rent called ‘Worksylver’ rendered at Michaelmas as accustomed from antiquity by certain tenants-at-will.
Thus seised, he married Anne daughter of Richard, Lord Talbot . Afterwards, by a charter dated 29 April 1421 and shown to the jurors, he granted the manor to William Iwe for life for past good service, to hold of the earl and his heirs. William was described in the grant as his beloved esquire. By letters patent dated Westminster 5 February 1426 and shown to the jurors [CPR 1422–1429, p. 326], Henry VI pardoned William Iwe for his transgression in acquiring and entering the manor of Whitwell without royal licence, and granted that he might hold the manor for life by due service without hindrance by the king, his heirs, or ministers. William died seised of this estate and reversion of the manor belongs to Thomas Courtenay, knight , son and heir of the late earl, a minor in the wardship of the king.
He died on 14 May last. Joan wife of Edward Seynt John, esquire, and Alice, sister of Joan and wife of John Yoo, esquire, are his daughters and next heirs. Joan is aged 28 and more and Alice is aged 22 and more.
