JOHN SON OF NICHOLAS LYE

Regarding his inheritance as son of Nicholas Lye who held of ‪ Henry V in chief. The lands and tenements are in the custody of Agnes Lye , Thomas Ryngwode , Elizabeth widow of Nicholas Lye , Thomas Martyn , and John Martyn, senior , by commission of Henry V [CFR 1413–1422, p. 396]. Inform them of the forthcoming proof of age.

Edmund Dauntesey , 80 and more, swears that John was born at Flamstone on 31 May 1407, baptised in the church of St Anne there, and was 21 on 31 May last. Asked how he knows, he says that he married Joan, now deceased, on the day of the birth and baptism. John Attebergh , 70 and more, says that Robert his son celebrated his first mass as a priest in the church. David Cernyngton , 71 and more, lost a laden ship in a sudden storm at sea. Thomas Gereberd , 75 and more, says that his granary suddenly caught fire. John Stratford , 84 and more, says that William his son died after a long illness. Richard Ecton , 77 and more, was then parish clerk and held the book before the priest at the baptism. William Mallary , 70 and more, says that such a wind blew up on the day of the birth that he and others feared the collapse of their weakened houses. John Pope , 72 and more, says that Joan his wife gave birth to a son called Gilbert. John Davy , 73 and more, gave John Lye ’s godfather and godmother water for washing their hands after the baptism. John Cleter , 78 and more, fetched Agnes Lye to nurse John Lye on the day of the birth. Robert Chamberleyn , 76 and more, carried two silver pots filled with wine to the church, to refresh John’s godfathers, godmother, and bystanders after the baptism. William Bruce , 74 and more, saw each of John’s godfathers give 6s. 8d. to him soon after he was baptised.
