HAMPSHIRE. Proof of age. Basingstoke 12 March 1428. [Veer].

Roger Cheston , 80 and more, swears that John was born at Stratfield Saye and baptised in the church of St Mary there. He was aged 21 and more on 9 September last. He married Joan, now deceased, on the day that John was born and baptised, and thus remembers John’s age. Nicholas Bernard , 70 and more, knows because Robert his son celebrated his first mass in the same church on the same day. William Scherefeld , 71 and more, lost a laden ship in a sudden storm at sea. Robert Coudray , 75 and more, knows because his barn in Stratfield Saye, stocked with grain, suddenly caught fire. Thomas atte Burgh , 84 and more, knows because William his son died after a long illness. Henry Serle , 77 and more, was parish clerk when John was baptised and held the book before the priest. Robert atte Halle , 72 and more, knows because a strong wind meant that he and others feared the collapse of their weakened houses. Robert atte Dene , 70 and more, knows because Joan his wife gave birth to Gilbert his son. Thomas Smyth , 73 and more, supplied water for John Dabrichecourt ’s godfathers and godmothers to wash their hands after the baptism.
