Holdings
By their deed dated 7 June 1421, shown to the jurors in evidence, John Merbury , Edward Brigge, esquire , and William Poleyn granted to Richard Oldecastell , his wife Elizabeth, who survives, and the heirs of their bodies the manors of Birtsmorton and Ryall, 1/2 manor of Queenhill, a carucate in Castlemorton and 1/2 carucate in Longdon. The manor of Queenhill is held of the king in chief by service of rendering yearly at the Exchequer a hound for hunting worth £3. By letters patent of 8 July 1422 [CPR 1416-22, pp. 439-40] the parties to the deed were pardoned for entering the manor of Queenhill without licence. The manor of Birtsmorton is held of the king of the duchy of Lancaster for a rose yearly at the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, annual value £4. The manor of Ryall is held of the bishop of Worcester in right of the church of St. Mary, Worcester , service unknown, annual value £3. The carucate in Castlemorton and the 1/2 carucate in Longdon are held of Nicholas Bery by fealty, annual value 10s., i.e. the carucate 6s. 8d. and the 1/2 carucate 3s. 4d.
He died on 26 Jan. 1422. Wentelina wife of Robert Whyteney, knight , aged 30 years and more, and Isobel wife of Walter Hakelyte, esquire , 21 years and more, are his sisters and next heirs, i.e. daughters of Thomas Oldecastell , father of Richard.
