He held the manor of Langford for life of the inheritance of Edward son and heir of Robert Langeford, knight , by demise of William Langeford, knight , Edward's grand- father, whose heir Edward is, i.e. father of Robert father of Edward, to him and his wife Elizabeth, deceased, to hold of William and his heirs, rendering £9 yearly at Michaelmas and Easter in equal portions during Elizabeth's life and afterwards £10 at the same terms, as appears by an indenture dated 3 June 1400 and shown to the jurors in evidence. William Grilleston and Elizabeth were seised of their free tenement. William Langeford and Elizabeth died and William Grilleston survived. The reversion of the manor passed successively to Robert Langeford and his son Edward , a minor in the king's wardship. William Grilleston therefore held nothing in the manor of the king in chief but held 40 a. arable, part of the manor, of the prior of St. Nicholas , Exeter , by knight service. The rest of the manor was held of Hugh Courtenay, earl of Devon , deceased, by knight service. Annual value of the entire manor, £10.
He died on 9 April last.
