Holdings

He held no lands or tenements of the king in chief in demesne or by service. Joseph Sausy was formerly seised in demesne as of fee in the manor of Leigham and its members called Manadon and Coleridge by feoffment of Thomas named in the writ. By a charter shown to the jurors and dated at Leigham 3 March 1421 Joseph granted the manor and its members to Thomas's widow Joan, who survives, to hold to her and her heirs by Thomas, remainder to the right heirs of Thomas. Joan entered the manor and had issue by Thomas John, a minor, who survives. The manor and its members are held of Philip Courtenay , son and heir of John Courtenay, knight , a minor in the king's wardship, of his manor of `Polesby' by knight service, annual value of the reversion of the manor nil before it occurs. He held in fee tail to him and his heirs male by Joan by grant of William Squyer and John Tregodenowe , chaplains, 20 messuages, 3 carucates, 18 a. wood, 100 a. pasture and £10 rent in Buckland in the Moor, Hooe, South Tawton, Withy Bridge, Oakford, Churchill, Viveham and Lobb, by the name of all his lands and tenements there and in Dinnerdake in Cornwall, reversion to Henry son of John Lerchedekne and his heirs male, reversion to Martin Lerchedekne, clerk , in tail male, remainder to Cecily formerly wife of John Lerchedekne, knight , deceased, in fee, as appears by a charter dated at Heaton Punchardon 14 Oct. 1415. The jurors say that 8 messuages, a carucate, 12 a. wood, 100 a. pasture and 20s. rent in Buckland in the Moor are held by knight service of the heir of John Brightle , in the king's wardship, of his manor of Stokeinteignhead. John Brightle held the manor in chief by knight service of Hugh [?recte Edward] Courtenay, earl of Devon , and it remains in the king's hand because of the minority of his heir, annual value of the reversion nil before it occurs. Annual value of the following reversions nil before they occur: 6 a. wood and £9 rent in South Tawton held of the earl of Warwick , service unknown; 2 messuages in Hooe held of Edward Pomeray , service unknown; a messuage and a moiety of a carucate in Withy Bridge held of Joan , widow of John Courtenay, knight , service unknown; a messuage and a moiety of a carucate in Oakford held of Edmund Pyne , service unknown; 4 messuages and a moiety of a carucate in Churchill and Viveham held of the earl of Huntingdon , service unknown; and 4 messuages and a moiety of a carucate in Lobb held of Richard Denysell and his wife Joan in right of Joan, service unknown. He also held in his demesne as of fee tail by grant of Henry Lerchedekne in a charter dated at Pickwell 2 March 1416 5 messuages, a toft, 120 a. arable, 20 a. pasture and 4s. rent in Pickwell, Overham, Netherham, Ilfracombe, Barnstaple and `Aslond', rendering £4 yearly at Michaelmas and Easter in equal portions to Henry and his heirs, who have right of distraint for non-payment. Annual values: 60 a. arable and 20 a. pasture in Pickwell held of the earl of Huntingdon , service unknown, 36s.; 20 a. pasture in the same township, 13s. 4d.; 5 messuages and 40 a. arable in Overham and Netherham held of Robert Chalons, knight , service unknown, annual value 20s.; 4s. rent from a tenement in Ilfracombe held of Richard Hankeford and his wife Elizabeth in right of Elizabeth, service unknown; a toft in Barnstaple held of John Cornwaill, knight , and his wife Elizabeth in right of Elizabeth, service unknown, nil; a messuage and 20 a. arable in `Aslond' held of Richard Cornwaill , service unknown, 6s. 8d.

He died on 4 Feb. last. John Archedekon , his son by Joan, is his next heir, aged 20 weeks and more.
