‹ E-CIPM 21-371: JOHN SOLERS ›
JOHN SOLERS SON AND HEIR OF WILLIAM SOLERS
Inquisition Head
Bristol. Proof of age. 27 Sept. 1419. [Nuton].
He is aged 21 years and more, was born at Bristol and was baptized in the church of St. John the Baptist on 16 Dec. 1393. John Stokes , 55 years and more, John Mareys , 56 years and more, John Glover , 48 years and more, William Pascowe , 51 years, and Richard Bailly , 49 years and more, all say that John Solers is aged 21 years and more because on the day of his baptism in the church of St. John the Baptist they were all sitting drinking in the house of Rose Asshe in the suburbs of Bristol next `SeintJohnesyate' when John Norton , William Solers 's apprentice, came to summon them to the church to see John baptized. They say that John Somerwell, then mayor of Bristol, John Castell , and Ellen Bakster , both of Bristol, raised John to the font. They also know that John is aged 21 years and more because John Somerwell was mayor in 1393-4. Roger Wellischorte , 42 years and more, and William Rede , 48 years and more, say that John Solers is 21 years and more because on the day of his baptism Roger carried a ewer and basin and William a candle called `le fantaper' from William Solers's house to the church; they say that they know that John is aged 21 years and more because John Somerwell was then mayor. John Forges , 44 years and more, John Thome , 56 years and more, John Prowte , 58 years and more, Richard Belle , 55 years and more, and Adam Barbour , 53 years, all say that John is aged 21 years and more. They know this because during his baptism they were in the crypt under the church when an agreement was made between Richard Gargrave , `bowyer', and Thomas Clyve , `goldsmyth', following a long dispute between them. A day for reconciliation had been appointed and an arbiter for each chosen at the instigation of John Somerwell, then mayor of Bristol. After agreement was reached between the parties, they came before the mayor and John Castell in the church after John's baptism and had the arbitration enrolled, and because John Somerwell was mayor of Bristol 1393-4, the deponents know that John Solers is aged 21 years and more.
