Inquisition Head
Gloucestershire. Proof of age. Gloucester. 20 Nov. [Grevell].
John Rolves , Robert Coderynton , Henry Croke and John Poleyn , all aged 50 years and more, say that she was born at Dixton and was baptized in the church there on 26 Jan. 1402, when each of them held a lighted candle thoughout the baptism, and saw Elizabeth's godfather and godmothers raise her to the font. As the parson who had baptized her was lowering the font cover it fell to the ground and was badly damaged. Afterwards they drank wine brought to the church by John Dicleston 's servant John Goldesburgh . John Wykeham , John Doughton , Nicholas Bailly and John Godestound, all aged 60 years and more, say that during the baptism they were in the church arbitrating in various disputes between John Fost and Richard Wade of Chipping Campden, who acknowledged their agreement by quitclaims to each other. They saw the parson lowering the font cover and say that because of his injuries he was unable to walk home. John Burnell , aged 59 years and more, says that on the day of Elizabeth's baptism he married his wife Margaret in the church and coming from the church saw the parson baptize Elizabeth. On the same day he enfeoffed John Graunt and Nicholas Sterre , chaplains, so that they could re-enfeoff him and Margaret in all his lands and tenements in Grafton, and by the date of the deed he knows that Elizabeth is aged 15 years and more. John Colewell , aged 40 years and more, says that Elizabeth is aged 15 years and more because on the day of her birth he acquired a messuage and 6 a. arable in Winchcombe from Margaret atte More , and by the date of the charter he knows that Elizabeth is of full age. The aforesaid Richard [C]olewych [sic], aged 58 years, was present at Elizabeth's baptism and after it held a towel on which Elizabeth's godfather and godmothers wiped their hands, and he saw John Joye, chaplain , write the day and year of her baptism in a missal belonging to the church. John Overbury , aged 65 years and more, says that Elizabeth is aged 15 years and more because on the day that she was born and baptized his wife Margaret died giving birth to a son called William, by whose death he entered into a saltpan for a year and a day. The jurors therefore say that Elizabeth is aged 15 years and more.
