JOHN DE HOLAND , BROTHER AND HEIR OF RICHARD DE HOLAND SON AND HEIR OF JOHN, LATE EARL OF HUNTINGDON

149 Writ for proof of age. ‡ 20 July 1418. [Wymbyssh]. Teste John, duke of Bedford.

He claims to have been born and baptized at Dartington. His brother Richard died a minor in the king's ward.

Inquisition Head

Devon. Proof of age. Dartington. 26 Aug. [Talbot].

He was 21 years old on 29 March 1416. He was born at Dartington and baptized in the church there on 29 March 1395. The jurors remember for the following reasons: Peter Eggecomb , aged 46 years, was present at the baptism. His uncle Thomas Cullyng, then abbot of Tavistock, was one of the godfathers and immediately after the baptism gave a gold cup decorated with gold latticework containing £10 to John and 20s. to John's nurse. William Rider , aged 52 years, was the servant and receiver of John de la Pomeray, knight , who after John's baptism acquitted William of his actions [by deed] under his seal of arms. William Gibb , aged 60 years, John Falewill , aged 65 years, and John Symon , 54 years, were present in the church and saw John Shealdon, prior of Plympton , John's other godfather, give him £20 after his baptism. John Helston , 52 years, and Warin Berkelegh, 50 years, servants in his house at Dartington of John de Holand father of John de Holand brother of Richard, saw Joan, wife of John de la Pomeray, knight , carry John to church to be baptized, and John de la Pomeray, knight , Joan's husband, and John Dynham, knight , ... of Joan, also saw her carry John to church and saw 24 large unlit candles carried before him by 24 men, including John and Warin, which were lit immediately after John's name was given. John Hugh, senior , 46 years, said that his wife Isabel was John's nurse for three years afterwards and that on the day of John's baptism he left Dartington for Guernsey because John de Holand , the father of John brother of Richard, forbade him to have marital relations with Isabel during that time. Walter Redcliff , 48 years, William Rogger, 60 years, and John Serle , 48 years, saw a large ash tree near the church burnt and John Hulle, esquire , and many others there were badly burned. Gilbert Bysschop of Bondleigh, 50 years, said that immediately after John's baptism a son was born to him and his wife.
