JOHN DRAYTON, KNIGHT

Jurors: Robert Poyntz ; Robert Coderyngton ; Robert Burdon ; Walter Estcourt ; John Wynter ; John Newman ; Thomas Tanner ; Richard Juwell ; Robert Coderych ; Richard Forster ; Robert Gentilman ; and Walter Toyt .

Holdings

Thomas, son and heir of Henry de la Ryvere, knight , held the manors of Tormarton and Acton Turville in his demesne as of fee and by his deed, dated at Tormarton on 31 Aug. 1400 and shown to the jurors, he granted them to Maurice Russell, knight , Nicholas Yve and Thomas Stanshawe , and their heirs and assigns. They held them in their demesne as of fee, and by their deed, dated at Dyrham on 27 Sept. 1400 and also shown, granted them to Thomas de la Ryvere , Isabel his wife and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to Thomas and his heirs. They had issue Maurice. Thomas died and John Drayton, knight , married Isabel. He died holding the manors in right of Isabel and with no other estate in them.

Tormarton is held of the lord of Yate as one knight’s fee, annual value £20; Acton Turville of the countess of Arundel as half a fee, annual value 100s.

Ralph Russell, knight , held the manor and advowson of Dyrham in his demesne as of fee and by licence of Edward III [CPR 1367–70, p.281] and by his deed, dated at Romsey on 19 Aug. 1369, granted it to Maurice his son and Isabel, Maurice’s wife, daughter of Edmund de Chelreye , and the heirs of their bodies with reversion to Ralph and his heirs and assigns. Maurice and Isabel had issue Margaret now wife of Gilbert Denys, knight , and Isabel late the wife of John Drayton . Maurice and Isabel died, and half the manor descended to each of their daughters. John Drayton died holding half in right of Isabel. The whole manor is held of the king in chief as one knight’s fee, annual value of the half £10.

He died on 3 Oct. last. Joan and Elizabeth are his daughters and heirs, aged 8 years and more and 5 years and more.

John Bukyngham, bishop of Lincoln , Thomas de Brantyngham, bishop of Exeter , William de Beauchamp , John Devereux , David Hanemere , now deceased, John de Drayton and William de Drayton , knight s, William Rikhull , Henry Englissh , Stephen, vicar of Sonning , and John Forster acquired in fee a 3rd part of the manor of Kempston from Hugh Segrave, knight , Andrew de Burnham , William de Pountfreyt, clerk , and Walter de Chippenham without licence; and John Forster released and quitclaimed it to the others. The king, for £40 paid by John Drayton , pardoned the trespass by letters patent of 1387 [CPR 1385–9, pp.339–40], shown to the jurors, and licensed them to enfeoff Nicholas de Drayton , the father, Richard de Metford , Master Andrew Baret , William Brightwell and Master David Bradwell , clerks, and the heirs of Nicholas. Nicholas, Richard and Andrew are dead. William Brightwell and David Bradwell are still alive and hold the 3rd part of the king in chief by knight service, annual value 20 marks.
