[E 368/215, brevia retornabilia, Michaelmas, rot. 10: Writ to the chamberlain of Chester. Henry IV, our grandfather, by letters patent dated 4 October 1403, enrolled in the Originalia of that year, rot. 17, of his special grace and in recompense for the great labours which his dear esquire Ralph Dutton endured in the king’s service, in his presence, in all his voyages after his arrival in England, granted to the same Ralph all the lands, tenements, rents, services, and reversions which Thomas Beston had in the county of Chester, for the term of his life, to the value of £45 yearly. The lands, etc., came to the king’s hand as forfeit because Thomas was armed as a rebel against the king in the company of Henry Percy . We are given to understand that Ralph died long since, so that ?the issues of the lands should be answered for [?text missing in ms]. Inquire as to the date of Ralph’s death, and summon all the occupiers of the lands before the Barons of the Exchequer at Westminster on the morrow of the close of Easter to give several account of the issues and profits. Make an extent of the lands, etc., and have the inquisition, etc., before the Barons. [Date not given.] By Originalia of 5 Henry VI [sic], rot. 17, and a writ returnable (retorn’) in the quindene of Easter 1441 by the chamberlain of Chester.]
