Holdings

He held no lands or tenements in demesne or in service of the king in chief or of any other. But William Alnewik, late bishop of Norwich , William Phelip, knight , Nicholas Wymbissh, clerk , Thomas Sutton of Milton, esquire , Richard Highwey, clerk , and William Weldon of Great Weldon were seised of the following in demesne as of fee. They demised the manor, together with 9 a. land and 2s. rent parcel thereof, to Walter for the term of his life, with remainders to Walter’s son William Cotton , and Alice his wife, for the term of their lives, and then to the heirs of the body of William. Walter was therefore seised in demesne as of free tenement and died seised of such estate. Royal licence was obtained and shown to the jurors [CPR 1436–41, p. 31]. In the charter, dated 11 December 1436, the premises were described as the manor of Exning and all the grantors’ lands and tenements in Burwell and Reach in Cambridgeshire.
