The jurors swear that he was born in the city of York and baptised in the church of St Mary Bishophill Junior or Senior (beate Marie episcopi) there and is aged 21 and more. [Date of birth not specified]. They know and recall this for the following reasons. William Clyff , aged 54, was in the church on the day of the baptism, when his son William was buried at the church. John Bekwyth , aged 43, was in the church and saw William lifted from the font, and on the same day his own son Thomas was born and baptized in the same church. Henry Claybroke , aged 55, was in the church and saw William lifted from the font, and on the way home he fell on a rock and broke his right shin. Robert Garton , aged 60, was in the church during the baptism, and had a wife called Katherine who died on the same day and was buried in the cemetery of the church. William Couper , aged 64, was in the church during the baptism, and offered for the soul of the above Katherine, and saw William lifted from the font. William Coverham , aged 42, had a son called Richard who had taken holy orders of priesthood, and who celebrated his first mass in the same church on the day of the baptism. John Kirkham , aged 60, knows because of the date of one part of a charter in his possession, by which he feoffed Thomas Hornby of a messuage in York. Walter Spenloffe , aged 45, was in the church at the time of the baptism, and afterwards provided hot water in a silver basin for the vicar, who was William’s godfather, to wash his hands. John Whiryk , aged 50, saw when this vicar gave William 13s. 4d. John Person , aged 60, held a candle in the church during the baptism. Simon Oliver , aged 48, was in the church during the baptism, and was godfather to Peter, son of Henry Estby , who was baptised in the church on the same day. William Leston , aged 43, was in the church during the baptism, and offered for the soul of the aforementioned Katherine [the wife of Robert Garton ], and saw William lifted from the font.
