The jurors swear that he was born in the vill of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, in the parish church [sic] of All Saints, and was baptized in the same church [date of birth not specified], and was aged 22 and more on the feast of St Peter in Chains [ 1 August ] last. They know and recall this well for the following reasons. John Clerk , aged 56 and more, was in the church when Robert was baptized, and saw John Rodes , Robert’s godfather, give him a silver mark immediately after the baptism. Edward Bartram , aged 52 and more, had a daughter Joan born on the same day and baptized in the same church. Robert Wyngates , aged 60 and more, carried a basin and ewer to the church to give water to the godfathers and godmother(s), for washing their hands after lifting the child from the font. Robert Wetwang , aged 68 and more, knows because Joan, his daughter, was dead at that time, and was buried in the cemetery of the same church on the day of the baptism. William Medecroft , aged 66 and more, knows because John, his son, was born on the same day and baptized in the same church. John Raa , aged 66 and more, knows because the river Tyne entered his house on account of the tide and of the great abundance of rain that day. Robert Laverok , aged 58 and more, gave Katherine, his daughter, in marriage to John Whitehede in the same church. Thomas Barbour , aged 60 and more, knows because Joan, his wife, was godmother, and on the same day Thomas gave her a silver goblet to give to Robert after he was baptized; and because on the same day Thomas gave 20d. to Robert’s nurse. Thomas Lyncoln , aged 60 and more, carried a towel and a silver salt-cellar before Robert to the church. Robert Swynburn , aged 66 and more, knows because on the same day Robert, his son, made affray with Nicholas Horton , who struck him and gave him a great wound in the arm. John Lytster, senior , aged 58 and more, knows because on same day John, his son, espoused Joan, daughter of John Cotour , in the same church. John Wotton , aged 56 and more, held a torch in his hand in the church during the whole baptism.
