The jurors were sworn and examined on the age of John son of Richard. They swear that he was born at Sproughton on the feast of St Nicholas the Bishop 9 Henry V [6 December 1421] and baptised in the parish church on the same feast. He was 21 and more on the feast of St Nicholas the Bishop last. John Merwyn , 60 and more, came to the church of Sproughton on the day of the birth and held a basin with ewer at the baptism. He gave water to John Cardenal , godfather of John son of Richard, to wash his hands. John Thorp , 64 and more, was in the church on the day of the birth, and Alice, wife of Robert Doket , John’s godmother, gave John, son, a silver goblet and 20s. to the nurse. Thomas Ludbrook , 58 and more, knows because a great wind blew up and threw his house to the ground. John Mannyng , 54 and more, knows because there was much thunder and lightning the night of the birth. John Peytewyn , 56 and more, was at a grand party on the day of the birth. John Hyde , 50 and more, knows because John Hemmyng fell from his horse and broke his neck on the day of the birth. He was afterwards buried in Sproughton churchyard. Thomas Brantston , 59 and more, knows because Alice, his servant, married John Frere . John Halle , 46 and more, was playing football and broke his right shin. William Brixton , 44 and more, knows because John Walpooll took priest’s orders in the church. John Norman , 49 and more, knows because John, his servant, died and was buried in Sproughton churchyard. Robert Bawdre , 45 and more, knows because John Cardenal , John’s godfather, gave John 20s. William Campell , 46 and more, was the capital pledge at the lord’s leet held on the same day.
