OTES GILBERT , ONE OF THE HEIRS OF OTES CHAMBERNOUN

Regarding his inheritance as son of William son of Elizabeth one of the sisters of Richard Chambernoun father of Otes Chambernoun , who held by knight service of Thomas, earl of Devon , lately a minor in the wardship of the king. Thomas held of the king in chief. The lands and tenements are in the custody of Robert Burton , John Copleston , and Nicholas Radford by commission of the king by letters patent [CFR 1430–37, pp. 95–6]. Have them informed of the forthcoming proof of age.

The jurors were diligently examined regarding the age of Otes, and swear that he was born at Compton and baptised in the church of St John the Baptist in Marldon. He was 21 years of age on the vigil of Lady Day last [24 March]. They well recollect his age for the following reasons. Gilbert Byschop , 60 and more, knows because Joan his daughter was born on the same day. John Furse , 50 and more, was there when Otes was baptised and saw Walter Reynell , the godfather, give him 40s. John Symon of Compton Pool, 53 and more, knows because Richard his son died after a long illness. Henry Marygge , 55 and more, married Alice daughter of William Veysyn on that day. William Langham , 60 and more, rode to Glastonbury on that day and fell among thieves who robbed him. Robert Lormer , 54 and more, was hunting in the forest of Ragch on that day, and was run down by a deer. He broke his left arm. William Botour , 66 and more, held the basin and ewer in church at the baptism. Walter (Wateri) Halewill, 80 and more, was there when Elizabeth Carewe , godmother of Otes, gave him 30s. and a gold ring on the day of his birth. William Norton , 53 and more, met the godfather and godmother at the end of the vill of Newton Bushel and there fell into a moat where he almost drowned. Gervase Mayn, 50 and more, held a candle in church at the baptism. William Prideaux , 58 and more, knows because Katherine his daughter was born on that day. William Wonston , 61, held a torch in church on that day.
