Holdings
Robert Rikedon of Essex and John Bellers, clerk , were seised in demesne as of fee of the following manor, lands, and tenements. They granted them to Edmund and Eleanor, then his wife, still living, and the heirs of their bodies. Edmund and Eleanor were thus jointly seised, and Edmund died seised of this estate and no other.
Kirtling, the manor; and
Ditton Camoys, Ditton Valence, Silverley, Saxon, and Ashley, various lands and tenements.
They are not held of the king in chief, but of whom is unknown. Annual value of the manor, lands, and tenements, £10.

He died on 22 February 1440. Robert Benstede is his kin and next heir, viz., son of Ralph son of Edmund, and is aged 5 years and more.n160

He held no lands or tenements of the king, or any other, in demesne or service because Joan, who was wife of Edward Benstede, knight , father of Edmund, holds

£20 annual rent in Winterslow in dower, held of the king in chief as 1/4 knight’s fee.
The rent was assigned by Edmund, with reversion to John son of Ralph son of Edmund, and Edmund’s next heir. The rent is her entire dower from all the lands and tenements formerly held by Edward in that county and in Hampshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, and Suffolk.

Edmund died on 9 February last. John son of Ralph son of Edmund is his next heir, and aged 5 years and more.

He held no lands or tenements of the king, or any other, in demesne or service because, long before his death, Edward Benstede, knight , father of Edmund, granted the following manor and advowson to Philip Thornbury , John Waltham, chaplain , and John Bellers, chaplain , and their heirs and assigns. The grant was made by his charter, sealed with his seal and dated at Benington on 27 June 1402.

Benington, the manor and advowson of the church there. The manor is held of the king in chief as a third of 2 knights’ fees. There is a messuage, worth nothing yearly; 2 gardens, containing 8 a. pasture, each acre worth 4d. yearly; 870 a. land, each acre worth 1 1/2d. yearly; 16 a. meadow, each acre worth 2s. yearly; a great park, worth nothing yearly above enclosure; £20 rent from free and customary tenants, payable at Christmas, Easter, Midsummer, and Michaelmas equally; and perquisites of view of frankpledge held on Monday in Pentecost week and of other courts there, worth 20s. yearly above the steward’s expenses.
On 13 July 1402, Philip, John, and John granted the manor and advowson to Edward and Joan his wife, still living, and the heirs of Edward. The grant was made by charter, sealed with their seals. Royal licence was previously obtained, dated at Westminster on 20 June 1402 [CPR 1401–1405, p. 104], and the licence and charters were shown to the jurors.

Higham Bensted, an acre of land in the manor in Walthamstow, annual value 2d., held of the king in chief by knight service.
He held no other nor more lands or tenements of the king, or any other, in demesne or service because, long before his death, Edward Benstede , father of Edmund, granted the manor of Higham Bensted, except the acre of land, to Philip Thornbury, chevalier , John Fray , Leonard Stepulton, esquire , and John Tymmes, clerk , and their heirs and assigns. The grant was made by charter, sealed with his seal and dated at Walthamstow on 14 June 1429. Edward is described as Edward Benstede, chevalier . On 20 November 1429, Philip, John, Leonard, and John demised the manor, except the acre, to Edward Benstede, chevalier , and Joan his wife, still living, to hold for their lives without impeachment of waste, with successive remainders to Edmund, son of Edward, and the heirs of his body; to Margaret, Alice, and Parnel, daughters of Edward, and the heirs of their bodies; to Edward son of Edward, and the heirs of his body; to John brother of Edward son of Edward, and the heirs of his body; and to the right heirs of Edward Benstede, chevalier . The grant was made by indented charter and royal licence was previously obtained, dated at Westminster on 10 June 1429 [CPR 1422–29, p. 539]. The charter and licence were shown to the jurors.
Higham Bensted, the manor, except 40 a. land and 5 a. meadow, is held of the king in chief as 1/2 knight’s fee. The 40 a. land are held of the earl of Warwick as of his manor of Walthamstow, service unknown, 4 a. meadow are held of the abbot of Waltham Holy Cross by service of 5s. yearly for all services, and the remaining acre of meadow is held of the rector of Chingford by service of 1d. yearly for all services. In the manor, there is a capital messuage, worth nothing yearly; 210 a. arable, each acre worth 2d. yearly; 36 a. meadow, each acre worth 2s. yearly; 8 a. pasture, each acre worth 12d. yearly; 50s. rent from various tenants, payable at Easter and Michaelmas equally; and perquisites of a view of frankpledge held on Thursday in Pentecost week, and of another court, worth 12d. yearly above the steward’s expenses.
Long before his death, Edward Benstede, knight , granted the following manor and advowson to John Bellers, parson of Benington , Henry Waryn , alias Wareyn de Asshewell, and John Tymmes, chaplain , and their heirs and assigns. The grant was made by his charter, sealed with his seal, and dated at Little Parndon on 31 May 1419. It was shown to the jurors. On 12 March 1421, John Bellers , Henry, and John Tymmes demised the manor and advowson to Edward Benstede, knight , and Joan his wife, still living, for their lives without impeachment of waste, with successive remainders to Edmund Benstede, knight , and the heirs of his body; to Margaret, Alice, and Parnel, sisters of Edmund, and the heirs of their bodies; to Edward Benstede, esquire , son of Edward Benstede, knight , and the heirs of his body; to John Benstede , son of Edward Benstede, knight , and the heirs of his body; and to the right heirs of Edward Benstede, knight . The grant was made by their indented charter, sealed with their seals. It was shown to the jurors.
Little Parndon, the manor and advowson of the church there, except 140 a. land and 16 a. pasture, held of the king in chief as 1/4 knight’s fee. Eighty of the 140 a. land are held of Humphrey, earl of Stafford , service unknown, and the 60 a. remaining are held of the abbot of Beeleigh , service unknown. The 16 a. pasture are held of Roger Spice as of his manor of Eastwick, service unknown. In the manor, there is a capital messuage, worth nothing yearly; 292 a. arable, each acre worth 2d. yearly; 26 a. and 3 roods of meadow, each acre worth 20d. yearly; 35 a. pasture, each acre worth 12d. yearly; and 15s. rent from various tenants, payable at Christmas, Easter, Midsummer, and Michaelmas, equally.
