The jurors were shown a fine dated three weeks from Easter 1417 made in the king’s court and recorded on the octave of Hilary, between Geoffrey Harley, esquire , Richard Hulle, esquire , and John Monyton, querents , and John Merbury, esquire , and Agnes then his wife, deforciants, relating to the following manor and vill, among other things [CP 25/1/291/64, no. 67]. By this fine, John Merbury and Agnes recognised the manor and vill as belonging by right to Geoffrey as that held by Geoffrey, Richard and John Monyton by grant of John Merbury and Agnes. By this recognition, Geoffrey, Richard and John Monyton granted the same to John and Agnes and the heirs of their bodies, to hold of the chief lords of the fee by due services, remainder wholly to Agnes’ right heirs, to hold likewise. By virtue of this fine John and Agnes were seised of the manor and vill in demesne as of fee tail, and they peacefully continued in this estate for the whole of Agnes’ life. Agnes died jointly seised with John in this estate, and not in any other, without producing heirs between them. John is still living. She died on 3 February last. Walter Devereux, esquire , is her kin and next heir, viz., son of Walter, son of Agnes, and is aged 24 years and more.
