JOHN BURGH , SON OF HUGH BURGH AND ELIZABETH

Writ Head

394 Writ de etate probanda. ‡ 20 June 1435. [Wymbyssh].

Regarding his inheritance as the son and heir of Hugh Burgh and Elizabeth, lately wife of Hugh, and sister and heir of Fulk de Mouthe. Hugh had held lands of the king in chief by curtesy after the death of Elizabeth from the inheritance of John. The lands are in the custody of Joan who was the wife of William Clopton, knight , John Throgmarton , John Vampage , and Thomas Compier by commission of the king [CFR 1430–37, pp. 21–2]. Inform Joan, John Throgmarton , John Vampage , and Thomas of the forthcoming proof of age. [Dorse:] they were informed. Place of proof given.

Holdings

Griffin Kynaston , 50 years and more, sworn and examined about John’s age, swears that he was born at Wattlesborough, baptised in the church of the same vill, and was 21 years of age on 12 June last. He was in the church when John was baptised, and saw John [recte Gilbert], Lord Talbot, stand as godfather; he thus well recollects that John was the said age. William Poynour , 60 years, was at the baptism, and saw Lord Talbot give John a goblet of silver-gilt with a cover after he was baptised. Philip Otteley , 50 years and more, was at the baptism and saw Lawrence Merbury stand as the other godfather. John Ouneslowe , 50 years and more, was at the baptism and saw the lady Joan Prayres stand as godmother. John Parys , 50 years and more, was also in the church and held a torch at the baptism. Guttyn ap Ieuan ap Rerit, 60 years, was in the church and held another torch. Roger Cleoton , 60 years, carried a basin with ewer to the baptism. Ralph Husee , 50 years and more, saw John Grene, esquire , carry a towel. William Spenser , 60 years, buried his mother on that day. John Husee , 50 years and more, buried William his brother, senior. Robert Rodyngton , 50 years and more, married Margery, daughter of John Marlowe . Roger Forster , 60 years, fell from his horse near the church, and broke his right shin.
