John the father held of ‪ Henry V in chief and John the son died a minor in ‪ Henry V’s wardship. Roland Lentale , to whom custody of all the father’s lands was granted by letters patent of ‪ Henry V, to be informed [CFR 1422–30, p. 327].

Holdings

The jurors,n125 sworn and separately examined on Hugh’s age, say that he was born at Poston on 24 June 1412 and baptised the same day in the church of the vill – the church of St Peter of Vowchurch. They have full knowledge of his day of birth and baptism for the following reasons relating to events 21 years ago. Roger Bodenham , aged 62 years and more, says that Hugh was aged 21 years and more on 24 June last and the following jurors all agree with him. He knows because he saw Griffin ap Harry and Thomas ap John of Dorstone, the godfathers, and Elizabeth, wife of John ap Harry , the godmother, raise Hugh from the font in the church at the request of Hugh Waterton, knight , and he drank red wine from Gascony and mead with them there. Hugh Hergest , 57 years and more, says his white greyhound named ‘Annergh’ bit Cadogan, servant of Griffin ap Harry , in the left thigh in the church at the time of the baptism. William Gernons , 60 years and more, was asked by John ap Harry , Hugh’s grandfather, to deliver 2 wax torches to burn near the font during Hugh’s baptism. Hugh Monynton , 47 years and more, saw Richard Went, servant of John ap Harry , carry bread and two silver pots full of sweet wine called ‘osey’ to the church at the time of the baptism. Thomas de la Hay, junior , 50 years and more, at the request of Hugh Waterton, knight , asked Griffin ap Harry at his dwelling at Bacton to be one of Hugh’s godfathers. John Chabbenore , 46 years and more, says Joan Shepard of Hereford his wife was midwife to Elizabeth, mother of Hugh, at the time of Hugh’s birth. Edmund Gomond , 50 years and more, was present in the church and made Joan his servant fill the font with water for Hugh’s baptism. John Bernard of Kynaston (Hayneston), 56 years and more, that day gave a pipe of red Gascon wine to John ap Harry , Hugh’s grandfather, for the day of churching of Elizabeth, Hugh’s mother. Howel (Hoell) ap Hoell, 50 years and more, was asked... [ms soiled] ?from the house of Ieuan ap ?Grouo next to the church by serving as priest in the church at the time of the baptism. Thomas Croyne , 59 years and more, that day sold John Mortymer , Hugh’s father, a black horse for 100s. cash. Thomas Brugge of Lea (Ley), 47 years and more [also given as 46 years and more], at the time of Hugh’s baptism was at the espousals of James Seybon, servant of John Bodenham, esquire , in St Peter’s church. Thomas Horsnet of Wormsley, 63 years and more, that day gave Elizabeth, Hugh’s mother, 2 milch cows to have milk for Hugh during his youth.
