The jurors say that John Barre was born at Rotherwas on 31 January 1413 and baptised in the church of St Mary of Rotherwas. He was aged 21 years and more at Candlemas last. Asked how they know they give the following recollections. John Brugge of Staunton on Wye (Staundon), aged 66 years and more, was retained with John Talbot, knight, Lord Talbot , to remain with him for a year, in peace and war, and John Talbot was the godfather. Thomas Brugge of Lea (Ley), 57 years and more, was in the service of the bishop of Hereford and one of his esquires, and the bishop was at Rotherwas and baptised John. John de Eye and William de Huntyton , both 56 years and more, rode with Agnes, lady of Weobley, from the vill of Weobley to that of Rotherwas for the baptism. Agnes was godmother and they saw the walls in the church furnished with red cloths of worsted. John Penbrugge and John Chabbenore , both 58 years and more, were at Rotherwas and carried two large, unlit torches before John when carried in the arms of a woman to the church for his baptism, and carried the burning torches before him from the church to the manor of Rotherwas where he had been born. John Goure , 60 years and more, was at Rotherwas on the day of the baptism and bought a messuage and carucate of land there from Thomas Werham and had full and peaceful seisin. John Shelwyk and William Gernon , both 57 years and more, were at Rotherwas and saw William, prior of Hereford , diligently perform the baptism. William de la Bere , 54 years and more, was at Rotherwas the day John was baptised and paid homage to the bishop of Hereford for his holding in Allensmore which he held of the bishop . Thomas Bromwych and Richard Russell , both 60 years and more, were at Rotherwas and bought 6 tuns of red wine from John Mey of Hereford, ‘marchaunt’, for £20 lawful money, for which sum they were bound by their bond, on the day John was baptised, to pay John Mey the following Michaelmas.
