John Rampton , 60 and more, swears that John was born at the castle at Castle Hedingham, baptised in the church there, and was aged 21 on 23 April last. He knows because he married Isabel, still living, on the day that John was born and baptised. Stephen Smyth , 54 and more, says that such a wind blew up on the day of the baptism that he and others feared the collapse of their weakened houses. Thomas Morce , 59 and more, says that Richard his son died after a long illness. Richard atte Hoo , 50 and more, says that his haybarn suddenly caught fire. John atte Ree , 49 and more, says that Joan his wife gave birth to a son called Edmund. Thomas Godyng , 55 and more, saw John’s godfather, Pain Typtoft, give him 40s. soon after he was baptised. Richard Stansted , 52 and more, gave the godfathers and godmother of John water for washing their hands after the baptism. William Holdelyn , 56 and more, took such a fall from his horse that he broke his right shin. Richard Herward , 46 and more, held a torch before the font during the baptism. John Gere , 51 and more, fetched Margaret Wellys to nurse John soon after the baptism. John Markeshale , 61 and more, says that John his son made his profession as a monk at the abbey of St John the Baptist in Colchester. Richard atte Medwe , 49 and more, carried two silver pots full of wine to the church, to refresh John’s godfathers and godmothers, and other bystanders after the baptism.
