HERTFORDSHIRE. Proof of age. Ware. 27 November 1425. [Stokdale]
The jurors say that William was born at Little Hadham and baptised in the church of the vill and was aged 21 years on 24 March last. They know for the following recollections. John Abbot , aged 60 years and more, married Margery, who survives, the day that William was born and baptised. John Lokyere , 63 years and more, says that there was such a strong wind that he and other men of the vill feared the weaker of their houses would collapse. William Renyngton , 54 years and more, says that William his son died the day that William was baptised, after a long illness. William Lekes , 47 years and more, says that his outhouse in the vill, with all the hay in it, was burnt by a sudden fire the day that William was baptised. John Valennce , 53 years and more, says that Maud his wife gave birth to a son named Robert the day that William was baptised. John Hoddesdon , 49 years and more, saw John Westom , William’s godfather, give William 6s. 8d. immediately after he was baptised. Thomas Partryche , 58 years and more, gave William’s godfathers and godmother water to wash their hands immediately after William was baptised. Edward Warde , 53 years and more, had such a great and heavy fall from a horse the day that William was baptised that he broke his left leg. Nicholas Thurgood , 42 years and more, held a torch before the baptismal font while William was baptised. Thomas Crypes , 43 years and more, was sent to get Margaret Welles to be William’s wet-nurse immediately after he was baptised. John Terlyng , 53 years and more, says that Walter his son was professed as a monk at St Alban’s monastery the day that William was baptised. William Thurgood , 62 years and more, carried two silver pots full of wine to the church for drinking by the godfathers and godmother and bystanders after William was baptised.
