Inquisition Head

Norfolk. Proof of age. Diss. 5 Dec. [Lexham].

William Shymplyng , 50, says that Mary was born at Shelfanger, was baptized in the church there and was aged 15 years on 8 Sept. last. He knows because his daughter Joan was married to John Walsham on that day. The following men say the same and they know for the following reasons: John Goodwyn , 50, carried a ewer and basin of silver from the manor of Shelfanger to the church to provide water for Mary's godfather and godmothers to wash their hands in after raising her from the font. Edmund Yonghusbonde , 60, carried a large candle from the manor of Shelfanger to the church and held it during Mary's baptism. William Knyght , 54, met many men and women coming from the church, who told him that Mary had been baptized amid great rejoicing. John Sweyn , 49, says that his son Edmund, who had been ill for a long time, died and was buried at Shelfanger on the day of Mary's baptism. Stephen Barnard , 60, carried two silver measures of `Clarrey' and of `Malvesy' wine with four silver cups to the church for the godfather and godmothers for drinking. Robert Wyrmegey , 49, saw John Goodwyn give the water to Mary's godfather and godmothers to wash their hands in after raising her from the font. John Bencelyn , 56, was the steward of the manor and after Mary's birth was sent to summon Joan Jernegan to be her nurse. John Hendry , 60, said that a great wind arose and all the men and women of the township were afraid for the safety of their houses. Thomas Baret , 47, was clerk of the parish church of Shelfanger and held a book before the priest during Mary's baptism. Nicholas Newman , 50, saw Robert Rokyngham , Mary's godfather, give her a cup of silver gilt and 6s. 8d. to her nurse. Thomas Boty , 56, saw Mary Dodyngsell , one of Mary's godmothers, give her a little bell and her nurse 6s. 8d.
