JOHN SCOTARD

Inquisition Head

695 Devon. Inquisition before Robert Cary, esquire, steward of John Cornewayll, knight, in his borough of Barnstaple at the Lawday court. Barnstaple. 20 April 1420.

Jurors: John Goldsmyth ; Thomas Halle ; John Symon ; Miles Horlok ; John Mulys ; John Rose ; Ralph Whyta ; Richard Bowedon ; John Hunte ; Richard Barbour ; Roger Pyncowe ; and Thomas Pyers .

Holdings

He was seised in his demesne as of fee of a tenement with curtilage and meadow adjoining in Barnstaple. After his death his son and heir John entered and gave them to Walter Spenser and Henry Baghell , who conveyed them to the younger John's mother Maud for life, reversion to Joan the younger John's wife, then to Maud daughter of the younger John and the legitimate heirs of her body, remainder to the right heirs of the younger John. Joan predeceased the younger John's mother Maud and his daughter Maud died without issue. Maud the mother held the tenement etc. for life by feoffment of Walter and Henry and after her death Gregory Whery entered as kinsman and next heir of the younger John, i.e. son of Walter son of Henry brother of the elder John Scotard, father of the younger John. No relief accrued to the lord. Gregory did fealty at the lord's court and was admitted to the tenement.
