Writ Head

260 Writ for proof of age ‡ 12 Jan. 1420. [Wymbyssh]. Teste Humphrey, duke of Gloucester.

Thomas Scales, brother and heir of Robert (son and heir of Robert Scales, knight) who died a ward of Henry V, claims to have been born and baptized at Middleton in Norfolk, and by grant of Henry IV is in the ward of the earl of Westmorland , who should be warned. Endorsed: the earl was warned.

Thomas brother and heir of Robert son and heir of Robert Scales, knight , was aged 21 years on 9 Oct. last. He was born at Middleton and baptized in the church there. William Pokedich , aged 50 years, knows this because he was present and carried a ewer and basin from which the godparents washed after the baptism. Edmund Goldyng , age 49 years, knows because William his father was buried on the same day. Hugh Bervyle , age 47 years, says his son Edmund was born at Middleton on the same day. John Pokedich , age 55 years, held a lighted candle at the baptism. Richard Kesse , age 54 years, says he held a book before … the font during the baptism. John Wynch , age 58 years, says he rang the church bells when Thomas was carried to the church for the baptism. John Clerk , age 60 years, says he rang the bells for the baptism with the parish clerk and John Wynch. John Mey , age 48 years, says at the time of Thomas’ birth he was sent for Christian Bernard to be his wetnurse. Robert Bakere , age 49 years, says on that day he … … and afterwards met many of his neighbours who told him Thomas had been born and baptised in Middleton that same day. William Bervyle , age 54 years, says his mother Katherine died at Middleton that day. John Malleson , age 49 years, says he carried two silver ewers with wine of Clarry and Maluesey and four silver cups with gold lids to the church so that the godparents and other bystanders could drink. John Dadell , age 60 years, says after the baptism he saw Thomas Bardolf, knight , Thomas’ godfather, give a gold covered cup to Thomas and 20s. to his nurse.
