ROBERT SON AND HEIR OF ROBERT SCALES, KNIGHT

Regarding lands and tenements held by Robert Scales, knight, of Henry IV in chief now in the hand of Henry V owing to the minority of his son and heir Robert, who died a minor in the king's ward.

Holdings

Assize rents in Rivenhall payable at Easter and Michaelmas by equal parts, namely, 19s. 3d. from the lands of Robert Leynham , as well as 3s. 4d. from those of John Wheler and Alice Davy , which Joan widow of Robert the father held in dower, came into the hand of ‪ Henry IV owing to the death of Robert Scales the father, the minority of Robert the son, and the death of Joan, and remain in the present king's hand. All are held of the king of the honor of Boulogne, service unknown.

Robert Scales the son died on 1 July 1418. Thomas his brother and heir is aged 21 years and more.

Holdings

Owing to the death of Robert Scales the father and the minority of Robert Scales the son, 2/3 manor of Haslingfield came into the hand of ‪ Henry IV . Elizabeth wife of Robert Scales held 1/3 of 2/3 in dower. By the death of Joan wife of Roger [sic] 1/3 also came into the king's hand.

The whole is held of the king in chief by knight service, annual values, the whole except 1/3 of 2/3 24 marks,
Elizabeth's part 100s. Ralph, earl of Westmorland , has held and taken the profits.

Holdings

Nothing came into the king's hand owing to the minority of Robert the son. But the manor of `Scaleshalle' in Middleton, the manor of Illington, the manor called Howe by King's Lynn, the manor called Raynham in East Raynham, the manor of `Castelhalle' in Middleton, the advowson of the church of Clenchwarton at alternate presentations with John Ingaldesthorp, knight , when it occurs by the death of Joan widow of Roger Scales , who held for life jointly with Roger, to them and their heirs and assigns, by the grant of Nicholas Massyngham and John Cleye, clerk , are in the king's hand owing to the minority of Robert, son and heir of Roger.

`Castelhalle' is held of the earl of March of the honor of Clare by the rent of a pair of gilt spurs, annual value 10 marks;
`Scaleshalle', Illington, Howe and East Raynham with the advowson of the king of the honor of Haughley and the ward of Dover castle;

the advowson 12d.
Also in the king's hand owing to the death of Isabel widow of William Ufford, late earl of Suffolk , and the minority of Robert the son, are the manor and advowson of the priory of Hickling, which she held for life by the grant, made by their letters patent, of William Phelipp , Robert Asshefeld , Thomas Wroxham and Henry Sergeant with reversion to Robert Scales and the heirs male of his body. Isabel attorned to Robert the father by virtue of the grant. Robert the son is the heir male of the body of his father Robert.
