John Lorty, knight, was seised in demesne as of fee tail of the manors of Swell and North Perrott, with lands, tenements, rents, reversions and services in the vills, and the advowson of the church of North Perrott, by grant of Sabine de Lorty (de Urtiaco) to Walter de Lorty (de Urtiaco), grandfather of John, and the heirs of his body. John, by charter shown to the jurors, granted the manors, lands, tenements, and advowson to William ?Bawsy, John Mey, clerk, and Richard Slade, and their heirs and assigns, so that they were seised. Afterwards William, John and Richard by charter shown to the jurors granted the same to Richard Dunster and William Wyllyng, clerks, and their heirs and assigns, so that they were seised. Afterwards Richard and William by assent of John Lorty assigned reasonable dower, viz. 1/3 of the same, to Maud, his wife, by metes and bounds. Afterwards by indenture shown to the jurors they granted the 2/3 residue of the same to John and Maud and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to John Lorty and his heirs. John and Maud were seised.
The manors, lands and tenements, truly worth £20 yearly, are held in socage of Henry, son and heir of John, late duke of Somerset, a minor in royal custody, of his manor of Curry Rivel, viz., the manor of Swell by 2d. at Michaelmas, and the manor of North Perrott by 2d. at the same feast for all services, as appears more fully in the charters of Sabine de Lorty to Walter, shown to the jurors. The king is to be answered for the 4d. rent during the minority of the above Henry.
He died on Monday 16 March last. Philip ?Carteret is his next heir, aged 40 and more, as the son of Maud, the sister of John. Immediately after John’s death he entered the manors, lands, tenements, and advowson by virtue of the entail, and endowed Maud by the assent of Maud, and granted to the same Maud the 2/3 residue.
One part of this indenture, sealed by the jurors, remains with the escheator, the other, sealed by the escheator, remains with the jurors
