WALTER SON OF THOMAS CARLETON

272 Writ for proof of age. ‡ 26 May 1419. [Wymbyssh]. Teste John, duke of Bedford.

Addressed to the mayor and escheator of the city of Lincoln. He claims to have been born at Lincoln and baptized in the church of St. Mary `Crakepole' there. His lands are in the king's hand.

Thomas Reve , John Neuton , William Temple , Roger Waltham , John Brewe , Thomas Sese , William Belle , William Bate , William Marsshall , John Sharleston , John Besthorp and John Layburn say that Walter is aged 23 years and more. Thomas Reve , aged 44 years, says that on 13 April 1393 he married his wife Margaret in the church of St. Mary `Crakepole', and on that day Walter was baptized by John Berne , the vicar, who is still alive. John Neuton , aged 44 years, on that day he bought of John Senesby a messuage in the same parish abutting on the east of the church. William Temple , aged 52 years, on that day his wife Margaret ran along the high road from his house to the house of Alice, Walter's mother, and broke her left shin. Roger Waltham , aged 49 years, says that his mother Isabel, staying in the parish for 3 days, died and was buried in the churchyard there. John Brewe , aged 46 years, says that 3 days before the baptism his bakehouse, with many of his goods in it, was burnt down. Thomas Sese , aged 50 years, says that Alexander Meryng at the wedding on 13 April ascending a step below Thomas was hit by a spur in his left eye, and lost his sight. William Belle , 46 years, William Bate , 48 years, William Marsshall , 45 years, and John Sharleston , 44 years, were enfeoffed that day in a messuage in that parish. After the baptism John Barne the vicar witnessed the seisin. John Besthorp , aged 53 years, says that his eldest son, Richard, was born in St. Stephen 's parish, Lincoln, part of the vicarage of St. Mary 's, and was then baptized by John Holme, chaplain . John Layburn , aged 52 years, was in the household of Thomas, father of Walter, who granted him a messuage for life for his good services.
