Regarding his inheritance as the son of John Burman son of Joan, one of the sisters and heirs of Elizabeth who was wife of John Thorp , who held of ‪Henry V in chief. The lands and tenements of the inheritance are in the custody of Thomas Stokdale by commission of the king [CFR 1430–37, pp. 148–9]. Have Thomas informed of the forthcoming proof of age. [Dorse:] He was informed and was present at the proof, but had nothing to show as to why the lands and tenements should not be rendered to John. Date and place of proof given.

The jurors were sworn and diligently examined on the age of John son of John. They swear that he was born at Sawbridgeworth and baptised in the church there. He was 25 on the feast of St Gregory the Pope last [12 March]. Thomas Hull , 72, stood as godfather to Thomas son of William Pekkowe , who was baptised at the church of Sawbridgeworth. William Pekkowe , 73, rode with William Fitzraff to ask Thomas Elys to stand as one of the godfathers of John son of John. William Fitzraff , 76, rode to Canterbury and broke his left shin on the way. Ellis Coweper , 74, knows because his house at Sawbridgeworth caught fire. Thomas Elys , 72, knows because he was assaulted by John Forster at Sawbridgeworth, and beaten, wounded, and badly cut. John Kere and Thomas Baker , each 76, were wardens of the church of Sawbridgeworth. John Reymond , 74, was arrested, taken to London, and there imprisoned. John atte Hoo , 72, knows because the church of Sawbridgeworth was newly roofed. John Bromleygh , 60, knows because the great bell of the church of Sawbridgeworth was bought. John Holgyls , 76, was the steward of Richard Fitz Water, chevalier . He held Richard’s court at Hertford on that day, and the court rolls were lost. John Wyn, 74, rode to London and, at the mansion of John, earl of Huntingdon, related to the earl that John Thorp [sic], father, had John, son, born and baptised. The earl, in celebration, gave 20s. to John Wyn for his work. [Head:] Delivered to court on 11 October 1441. [Dorse:] Delivered to court on 6 August 1441.
