He held no lands or tenements of the king in chief but he was lately seised of the following in demesne as of fee. Great Henny (Henney), the manor, annual value £20, with advowson of the church. High Ongar, the manor, annual value £10. Bulmer, the manor called ‘Bovettes’, annual value 40s. Neither the manors and advowson, nor any parcel of the same, are held of the king, but of whom they are held is unknown. He enfeoffed Richard Beauchamp, lately earl of Warwick , William Phelip, Lord Bardolf , John Fastolff , John Howard , Richard Waldegrave , Thomas Tudenham , knights, William Clopton , Henry Pakenham , esquires, Thomas Pekke , and Roger Philpote , clerks, with the manors and advowson, to hold them and their heirs and assigns. They were thus seised and, afterwards, by charter shown to the jurors, they demised the manors of High Ongar and Bulmer – ‘Pontes’ and ‘Bovettes’ – to John Fitzrauf, described as John Fitzrauf, senior, esquire, for life, with successive remainders to John Fitzrauf son of John Fitzrauf, and Alice his wife, and the heirs male of their bodies; to the heirs male of the body of John, father; and to Joan, daughter of John, father, and her heirs and assigns. Richard, late earl etc. [as above] also, by charter shown to the jurors, demised the manor and advowson of Great or Little Henny (Henney) to John Fitzrauf, senior , for life, with successive remainders to John, his son, and Alice, and the heirs male of their bodies; to the heirs male of the body of John; and to Maud, John’s other daughter, and her heirs and assigns. John Fitzrauf, named in the writ, died seised of the manors as of free tenement, with remainder belonging to John, son, and Alice his wife.
He died on 11 August last. John is his son and next heir, and aged 30 and more.
The clerk may have been mistaken in describing the inquisition as taken virtute officii. John Fitzrauf is described in the inquisition as ‘named in the writ’, and the formulaic header of the inquisition indicates that it was delivered initially to Chancery. The word ‘not’ is missed out in ms, but the sentence does not otherwise make any sense: ‘[t]he manors and advowson... are held of the king, but of whom they are held is unknown’.
